"what do you mean by 'high profile client'?", kiyoko heard her husband ask as he walked back into the living room, brimming with curiosity.

"it's someone... influential", she said, clicking restlessly on the keys of her laptop, "go to sleep"

"who is it?", he asked and she groaned, "i know you can't tell me but tell me!! if you don't tell me who will you tell??"

"not telling you or anyone", she smiled back up at him, illuminated by the blue light from the screen in the otherwise dimly lit room, "seriously ryu, bedtime"

"you've never once stayed up at night because of a patient", ryuunosuke tanaka remarked, sitting across from her instead of listening to her request, "what's so interesting?"

"there are a lot of things she's not telling me", kiyoko sighed, choosing her words wisely so that she didn't divulge any information you'd actually told her, "and i think there's a lot to unpack. but i don't know, i don't even think she'll come back for another session."

"well", tanaka laid his elbows on the table, pouting now, "can't say my day was less interesting than yours"

"really?", she was happy to switch topics because she was scared she'd slip up and tell him all her theories about what she thought had happened to you. "do tell"

"eh, i bumped into daichi-san today", he began, "y'know the company he works at got acquired by the sakusas recently"

great, the exact topic i was hoping to avoid, kiyoko sighed. but her curiosity increased.

she nodded, "and?"

"looks like mayumi sakusa's number two is retiring in a week or two", he continued, "and she's getting a new vice president"

"who is...?", she waited, clicking her tongue impatiently at the suspense he was creating.

if it was you, the plot would only get more convoluted. if it wasn't, she still wouldn't have all the answers.

"in fact, i know him", tanaka laughed unsurely, "like, we used to know him. now, not so much."

the answer was like nothing she'd ever imagined.

-•-•-•-

you hadn't wondered up until now about what rintarou's family did for a living.

he was rich, one could deduce that much. but not on the miyas' or sakusas' level.

you were headed to his apartment. he wasn't really talking, because he knew you weren't in the headspace to have any conversation. so he put the reins in your hands and you had chosen silence.

shinsuke had been perplexed to see you with rintarou- his arms around you in the dark parking lot, tight and uncaring- but he didn't say much about it.

he was trailing rintarou's car closely now, just to make sure he knew where you were and whether you were safe. it was his job after all.

your mind was elsewhere entirely as you stared outside the window.

you couldn't stop thinking about what osamu had said when you eavesdropped on him. you didn't want to think about it. you wished you hadn't gone in that direction at all.

and great, atsumu knew about your circumstances- he chose to defend his brother too. you seriously doubted whether any of your siblings would defend you like that.
