A/N: some background stuff before the big time skip

"It's the first day of senior year, you are not skipping." Her mom snaps.

"You said you didn't want me to go to school with this attitude, so I won't go." Ellie shrugs while putting her bowl in the sink.

"Why do I even bother with you?" Her mom sighs before sitting down.

"I'll see you all later." Ellie grumbles while grabbing her keys and backpack.

"Remember, I pay for that car!" Her mom yells as she slams the door.

"Thank fucking god I only have one year left in that house." She sighs as she gets in her car.

*INCOMING CALL: luz*

"Hey, Luz." Ellie smiles as soon as she answers the phone.

"Ellie! Me and Vee have missed you so much. We've been telling everyone at school we're twins who were separated at birth." Luz laughs.

"High school treating you well?" Ellie asks as she starts the car.

"Surprisingly, yeah! I haven't made many friends as per usual but it isn't too bad. It's your first day right?" Luz asks.

"Yeah, I'm on the way now. I just fought with my mom also as per usual." She sighs while pulling the car out of the driveway.

"That sucks. Well, save me a seat at your graduation! I've gotta go, it's time to leave for school." Luz says.

"Have a good day, make good choices." Ellie laughs.

"Love ya! Bye." Luz laughs.

"Love you too, bye." Ellie smiles before hanging up.

Going through everything they did together only made them closer. It's hard to talk every day but they try. That's good enough for both of them.

She walks through the cafeteria with her headphones in like usual. It's lunch now and everyone is interacting socially after all of the classes throughout the day. Ellie just walks to sit by the windowsill like usual. She lays out her sketchbook on her lap with her pencil in hand. Nowadays, she's found herself drawing Hunter a lot. But it's getting harder and harder to remember what he looks like as the days go on.

"Ellie never hangs out with anyone it's so weird." Someone at the table near her says.

"Dude, she's right there." One of them laughs.

"What? She can't hear us anyways, she always has those headphones in." Another one snickers.

"What a loser though. Where'd she get all those scars from anyways? Who's bad side did that girl get on." One of them jokes and the whole table laughs.

"She's a total freak." They joke again before she slams her book shut and stands up.

"It's for my sister." She whispers to herself as she makes her way back across the cafeteria.

"And that's basically it. I know long division is confusing but eventually it becomes second nature." Ellie smiles at Karina who sits across from her at the table.

They sit doing their homework together with Ellie occasionally helping the younger girl. She leans in closer to her computer to get a closer look at the equation in front of her. And then their mother walks into the room which makes her sister more than uncomfortable. The younger girl stands up and walks quickly to her room while Ellie stays calmly at the table.

"Don't sit so close to the screen." The woman sighs.

"Got it." Ellie nods and leans back.

"You ruined me, Elle." Her mom says while putting water in the kettle.

"So you've told me."

"I was so beautiful before I got pregnant with you." She informs as if she hasn't said this multiple times.

"They say daughters take their mother's beauty." Ellie says.

"I hope all this studying and drawing and singing you do turns into something great. I deserve it after all the trouble you've caused me." She says before clearing her throat.

"Be nice to the kid, she's gonna be paying our bills someday." David says as he steps into the kitchen as well.

"As if." Ellie mumbles so neither of them can hear.

"No one in this house is nice to me." She scoffs.

"Cariño-"

"I see the way your secretary looks at you. Just because she bats her prissy little eyes at you and makes casual boring workplace conversation with you doesn't mean you can sway me." She rolls her eyes and Ellie has to hold in laughter. This woman is insane.

"What are you talking about?" His voice gets lower.

"She makes you feel so strong and powerful, I bet. She never challenges you or makes you feel stupid. I hear your terrible flirting through the walls. I guess that's what happens when you marry your boss." The woman scoffs.

"I'm sure not gonna miss the witty repartee between you and David when I go to college." Ellie sighs happily.

"In three months. Until then, you have to deal with it." Her mom shrugs before walking away.

"So..." David starts awkwardly. "You got a boyfriend yet?"

"Goodnight, David." She sighs before shutting her compute and standing up.

"Ellie! Ellie! I need help!" Karina runs into her room. She sits on her own windowsill this time with her sketchbook as she pulls her headphones out to hear.

"What's up?" She asks as her sister slams the door behind her.

"I tried to talk to Jessica but I accidentally knocked all of her paints over! I just want her to like me since she's closer to my age than Crystal. How do I make Jess love me?" She whines and throws herself on the bed.

"You can't force love, dingus. All you can really do is be good to people around you and don't close yourself off. It's never too late to change someone's mind. You still get to choose who you want to be and the life you want." Ellie shrugs.

"Why are you so smart?" She groans into a pillow.

"Because I've gone through it. It doesn't matter if people love or respect you as long as you love and respect yourself. After that, change as many minds as you want." She smiles.

"Ellie!" Luz yells and waves happily.

"Luz!" Ellie laughs and smiles so widely as she runs up to Luz.

"It's been so long." Luz smiles as she pulls Ellie into a big hug.

"I know. Thank you so much for coming! God, I've missed you." Ellie laughs into the hug.

"I've missed you too. And hey, you only graduate high school once! I wouldn't miss it for the world." Luz admits before they finally pull away. "We have so much to catch up on."

"My mom is throwing this big party tonight just for show but we can sneak off to go talk," Ellie tells her.

"Perfect."
