*Ring* The sound of the bell above the small store door rang as I left, a can of chilled monarch in one hand and my phone in the other. I stepped onto the desolate, dark street and audibly shivered at the white air left my lips. Fuck, I should have brought a thicker coat. I slipped my phone in the back pocket of my skin-tight jeans, while walking down the road. Using the light provided by the streetlight, which flickered every few seconds, I took a cigarette out my pocket. I placed the cigarette between my chapped lips and covered my hand as I flicked the lighter. I know it's a nasty habit but I don't care. My hands, slightly purple, reached around the opposing forearm and rubbed aggressively. I love winter, but this is extreme. Forgetting the weather, I kept walking down the vast streets of Province Town, Massachusetts.

The streets were very dark and quiet, the only sound being the faint wind; light waves crashing on the sand in the distance; and the flickering street light I could vaguely see. I took a hit of my cigarette and watched the tip light up with an orange glow. I exhaled the smoke and breathed in the cold air. Where am I even going? I kept walking regardless, almost feeling scared as I glanced around. Then I heard something. It was very quiet but after I heard it again, I knew what it was. "Help! Please, somebody, help me!" The sound went again and I dropped my drink in response. I could tell it was a woman. I didn't even have time to be shocked or confused before I had the instinct to run in the direction of the sound. I have to help her. I sprinted down the street, my cigarette being tossed to the icy road. I reached the end and turned to the right where the now loud screaming came from. I saw a woman, obviously homeless, being cornered against the side of a building. She was surrounded by pale, bald creatures. There heads twitched and they hissed with warped grins. Disbelief paralysed me until the woman noticed me.

I snapped back as the shouting got louder and louder. "Hey, hey please! Help me!" She looked at me with pleading eyes. I could finally move and ran up to the spot. I pushed one of the creatures out the way, knocking it to the ground. The woman reached for me and I took her gloved hand, helping her up. Once she was stood, we ran. There was no time for brief exchanges, we had to go. I pushed another thing out the way and me and the unknown woman ran until we reached the beach. I only then noticed that we had been holding hands the whole time. I let go and placed my hands on my knees, leaning over to pant intensely. I felt like I could throw up for running so fast. I looked in all directions and I couldn't see any creatures so I assumed we were safe. When I could breathe normally, I turned to the woman. She was breathing fast while looking at me, her eyes glassy with tears. I tried to interpret her emotions but I couldn't tell if she was scared, shocked, confused or grateful. "Thank you." She whispered in a horse voice. I smiled at her, unable to talk for some reason. Eventually I replied. "It's no problem, are you okay? Do you want anything? W- we could go to the store and get some food?" She furrowed her brows and looked suddenly nervous. "No it- it's fine. I don't have the money for that." I smiled sheepishly and took her hand again. "It's okay, it's on me." She smiled as a tear fell from her eye. She squeezed my hand and we walked to the store I had been to previously.

We left the store as I held the bag. I learned that her name was Karen and that she had lived on the streets for ages. She sort of tensed when I was tossing food in the basket and it took a while for me to convince her that I was okay with buying food for her. She felt awful but I just wanted to make sure she was fed and well. We returned to the beach, talking and laughing. I took the blanket that I bought us and laid it out. We sat down and took out our snacks. I got two sandwich boxes, two drinks and two desserts. Karen's eyes lit up under the pale moonlight as she took the sandwich I handed her. When she took a bite, she hummed in satisfaction. "Wow, this is so good!" She spoke with her mouth full. We laughed before I replied. "I'm glad you like it." Then we looked at each other and smiled. I reached my hand over and held hers. "Would you like a place to stay?" She looked confused as her eyes filled. "R- really?" I smiled and nodded. "Yes! Yes, I'd love that!" She put her sandwich box down and hugged me tightly. It caught me off guard but I hugged back, closing my eyes. That was how we became friends.
