"Let us go!" she yelled at them, not caring to be discreet with her tone. Even as her voice echoed loudly across the palace's halls, they pretended not to listen.

Jay, in the meantime, was oddly silent.

"Can't you take us to a court? Does it have to be the Emperor?" she went on to say, shuffling around in the guard's grasp.

"You both assaulted someone and you tried to trespass on a ship," one of the guards said eventually. "You could be spies from The Dark Island."

"I'm from Ignacia!" she said. "And Jay didn't do anything!"

He pushed her, not letting her stop walking. "He punched a guard. That's assault."

Her gaze trailed over to him in disbelief. She frowned.

He looked away ashamed. His voice was but a mere whisper. "You said he was hurting you."

Was it cheesy for her heart to flutter? At that moment, yes.

Eventually, they were led to a room. The moment they were let go, Nya turned to run. But alas, they closed the door on her face and locked it.

The only other exit was a large, metal door on the other wall. "When you're ready to plead your case, go in," the guard said.

She shook her hands violently, hoping that the handcuffs would slip off. Of course, they didn't. She contemplated biting them, but that didn't look safe either.

She gave up, leaning against the wall with a pout. She wasn't moving an inch unless they got freed.

During that time, her gaze couldn't help but focus on his. He didn't return the gesture, however, looking at the ground blankly.

She gulped and, with a deep breath, tapped his shoulder.

It was as if she had set off a bomb.

"What will my parents say? They'll think that I'm a criminal! And I am technically a criminal, I tried to poison someone! What if we go to jail? We'll die in there! I can't do this. I'm not a criminal, I'm too cute to go to jail! He'll behead us!"

Originally, his rambling was admittedly amusing to witness. But when tears formed in his eyes, a pit appeared in her stomach.

It was her fault. She had done that.

She placed her hands on both his shoulders, giving them a squeeze as she forced his gaze on hers.

"Jay," she said.

"What?"

"Are you done?"

He smiled with a sniffle. "Yeah."

"Good. I'll do the talking, okay?"

"Okay," he said. "But, uh, the ship leaves in a few hours. You'll have to make it quick if you want to leave."

"I'm not leaving until you're cleared out from all this," she said. She couldn't stand to look at his face. "I... I'm really sorry. It was a dumb idea."

"It was," he admitted. She shot him a glare, which was then broken by a laugh.

They looked at the towering doors in front of them with fear. Their hands intertwined, whether in obligation or reassurance, their free hands reaching for each door handle respectively.
