A/N

I was checking the stats for this story recently and OF COURSE the makeout chapter has the most engagement. It's not even an insult I just find it funny. 😂

I've noticed that all of my Jaya stories must include a mandatory Ed n' Edna visit/appearance. Will I stop doing it? No. Never.

Also, might as well say this since I'm not going to include it in the story anymore. I was originally going to have a motel chapter (basically the two of them staying in a motel), but I scrapped it cause A) it was boring and B) I can't milk the one-bed trope more than I already have.

Anyway, just means you get more Ed n' Edna content ;).

Enjoy!

She never really wanted to wake up. Her blanket was so, so warm, and the weather so, so not. The horse's gentle gallops through the sand brought her peace as the hand combing through her hair lulled her back to sleep.

She wanted to grab his hand and bring it to her face, maybe even give it a kiss. Alas, she was too tired to move.

The carriage came to a stop and a heavy sigh escaped his lips. He leaned back against the seat, but his caressing of her hair didn't stop.

She found the energy to take a peek at his face, but her eyes closed instantly when he looked at her.

Soft whimpers were heard, but he took a deep breath and stopped before they could evolve into cries.

He tapped her shoulder, nudging her gently.

"Psst, Nya, wake up," he said. "We're here."

She pretended to wake up for the first time that night, only responding with a small hum.

As she sat up, assaulted by both the freezing wind and her fatigue, she stretched.

"What time is it?" she said with a small yawn.

He snickered slightly. "Past midnight."

"Why didn't you sleep as well?"

He shrugged. The dried-up tears on his cheeks didn't go unnoticed, but she didn't comment on it.

"Couldn't sleep," he said as he jumped out of the carriage, offering to help her down as well.

She chose to believe him for the time being.

The poorly-painted sign at the front was quite worn. Even through the dark, it was clear that some of the letters had faded.

"Ed n' Edna's Scrap and Junk," it read, but the 'S' was the most faded letter of them all, almost completely disappearing.

She couldn't help but snicker at the lack of an 'S' upon reading it once more.

"Everyone laughs at that," he groaned in response, dragging her inside.

He didn't like to look around; instead, he was constantly looking at her gaze, seeing where it would trail off to, whether she would be disappointed, whether she would hate him.

Instead of that, only amazement laced her expression.

"You grew up here? No wonder you're a mechanic."

He didn't know why, but her remark made him blush. "Yeah... My parents used to be the main metal providers of the Emperor."

"Woah." She raised an eyebrow. "Who's the main provider now?"
