"Hey, could you help me out?" Nadine asked from her spot inside the car. The girl had decided that she needed to change, being that she wore the same outfit for the last two nights. She was laid out in the back seat with her feet in the air. Five tilted his head to view her. He was leaning against the car's door beside the window. The boys eyes squinted as they jumped from her face to her shoe, which was propped up in the window.
With a sigh, he took ahold of her laces and started tying them. His eyes jumped to the single black thread that was laced around her ankle, one of his eyebrows shooting up slightly.
Five gently picked it up off her skin. She inhaled as his hand brushed up against her ankle. "What's this for?" He asked, his fingers playing with the string while his eyes flickered over her face. She was silent for a second as she stared into his eyes, captured in the forest within him, before finally clearing her throat and nodding. "It's for protection. I've worn it ever since Hazel and Cha-Cha but I don't think it works very well." She pulled her foot out of his hands with a sad smile, crossing her legs in the seat.
"God, that feels like ages ago." Five commented, sticking his hands into his pockets and resuming his previous position. "It really does." Nadine agreed with a small nod. A time of comfortable silence past through them before Five turned to look at her.
He watched as she held one of her hands with the palm facing upwards and the other she turned downwards with her index finger pointing at the one below. Her finger went through the air in circles, like she was drawing something on her palm.
Five looked away quickly as he saw that she was turning to face him. She tilted her head at the movement but continued to lean her upper body out of the window, pulling on his sleeve. He turned around and looked down at her hand, which held a single black thread. "Here. Wear it around your right ankle." She spoke softly, cupping his hand with hers and placing it on the boys open palm. His eyes traveled to her face, watching as she circled it once more with her index finger as it got to his hands.
Nadine felt his stare, slowly looking up and meeting his eyes. She held her breath as he didn't break eye contact, making her aware of their close proximity. After a few minutes, the boy finally broke eye contact and turned to face the building again, stuffing his hands —along with the anklet—into his pocket.
"Five." Nadine spoke, sinking back into the car slightly. She kept her arms propped up on the edge of the open window, her chin settling on them. When she got no response, she tilted her head towards him further. "Five?"
