I Started A Joke
~ Bee Gees

"I started a joke
Which started the whole world crying
But I didn't see
That the joke was on me, oh no

I started to cry
Which started the whole world laughing
Oh, if I'd only seen
That the joke was on me

I looked at the skies
Running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed
Hurting my head from things that I'd said

'Til I finally died
Which started the whole world living
Oh, if I'd only seen
That the joke was on me"

'Til I finally diedWhich started the whole world livingOh, if I'd only seenThat the joke was on me"

CHAPTER 19: THE SACRIFICE

David snapped his fingers three times in front of Nadine's face to make sure she was under. He smiled when she gave no indication of awareness.

The man and Dot backed away from their position close to the two teens and the woman joined the others in the crowd. "Another amazing show of hypnosis from Dot." The group clapped loudly with whoops of encouragement. Dorothea grinned at them, her cheeks warming at the attention.

The group looked at the two teenagers, who's lips were turning a light shade of blue. David turned quickly and pointed at Margie. "You, bring me the box."

The girl headed out of the water and on to the sand. She stomped towards the large fire pit they had just lit and reached into the fire without hesitation, bringing out a metal box with a handle. Her hand and arm came out charred and boiling but she made no move to show that it hurt.

She stepped her feet back into the water and turned around, placing the box on the sand gently. With steady hands, Margie opened the box and got up, stepping away from it.

"We have waited over a century to find two people who were adequate enough for the gods." David started with a booming voice. Cheers sounded as the group kicked water. Nadine and Eli sat still while their upper bodies got soaked, their hair dripping with the cold liquid.

"Now, we will have our Juliet and Ambroise back with us!" The men and women in the crowd got louder with their screams, the splashing growing in size as David brought out an iron dagger from inside the box. He stepped carefully through the water with the knife held across both hands.

"Stand." The men grabbed each of Nadine's arms and she did what she was told.

The teen stood up to her full length of 5'1, her face staring forward with cloudy eyes.
