Chapter 39 - Consequences

Korra and Asami sat waiting for the ER doctor to see them. Asami was still holding the ice pack on her jaw hoping to minimize any swelling, concerned about how it would look when she arrived  at work on Monday.  It was bad enough she still had to explain what happened to Korra. She didn't want to have to talk to anyone else about it. Korra had asked her about it again. She just said it was an accident and changed the subject.

The doctor entered the room and slid the curtain back. Korra straightened up in her seat, somewhat nervous, worried she would tell them Asami's injury was worse than it looked. 

"Hi, I'm Dr. Liang." She turned toward Asami. "So you're our patient." She looked down at her clipboard. "Oh. Miss Sato." She looked back up at Asami then to Korra. She had a small grin on her face as she looked back down at the clipboard. Korra glanced at Asami making eye contact. She raised her hands and gave her a confused look. The Doctor was silent for longer than seemed normal. Finally Asami cleared her throat and was about to say something when Dr. Liang looked up again.

"I'm sorry, I just have heard a lot about you and I can't believe you're sitting here in front of me. The contributions your company has made to the hospital have helped so many people." Asami smiled as much as she could then winced in pain. The doctors eyes widened. "Oh, I'm  so sorry this is very unprofessional of me. Let's look at your injury. " she examined Asami's face and asked her  a series of questions regarding how she was feeling. Finally, as she looked inside her mouth for any damage to her teeth, she asked the one question Asami didn't want to answer. "So, how did this happen?" Asami gave a quick look over at Korra then back at the doctor.

"It...uh. it was an accident." She definitely didn't want to say it happened at work. "I....well, my friend was holding a big wrench...." Korra narrowed her eyes. ".....and I startled her, I came up behind her and she didn't hear me til I said her name. Then she turned around with the wrench in her hand and it hit me." Korra shifted in her seat.

"Sami, are you talking about Kuvira? Did she do this to you?"  Asami kept her eyes on the doctor and held up a finger to Korra, indicating she wanted her to hold on.

"So, am I going to be ok?"

Dr Liang smiled brightly. "Yes Miss Sato, I think you're going to be just fine. If you have a lot of pain I can give you a prescription, but otherwise just keep icing it. There's no serious damage. You're very fortunate."

Suyin paced the floor of the ER waiting area. She hadn't been allowed to go in with Kuvira, as she wasn't related. She had tried to give as much information as she could about Kuvira to the hospital staff. She had no clue about any health insurance she might have, or any other information really.  She couldn't even remember her birthday even though she had dated Bataar Jr. for a little over a year.

Two nurses stepped into the waiting area, glancing at Suyin as they chatted.  One made her way over with some paperwork.  "Hello, you're here with uh....Kuvira?"

Suyin nodded. "Yes, how is she?" The nurse looked up and waved the other nurse over.

"I don't actually know, I'm here to double check the information that you gave us and  find out if there is anyone else you could contact that could tell us a little bit more. She doesn't seem to remember too much right now." The second nurse approached.  "This is Lori, the nurse that's been checking in on your friend."

Suyin scoffed internally, friend was not the right word. "Yes, um, my coworker, how is she?"

"She has a pretty serious concussion, she's finally conscious though, if you'd like you can come see her when you're done here."

Suyin didn't necessarily want to see her but she knew she probably should. "Yes, thank you, I'll do that." She turned back to the other woman. "I do have someone you could contact that should have more information." The nurse handed her a clipboard so she could fill in any extra contact information. She jotted down Asami's name then paused for a moment before writing down her sons name. She would have to call him and let him know. She handed the clipboard back and started in the direction of the other nurse.
