Chapter 30

AYODEJI'S POV

I didn’t realize Lara did not cook anything before leaving the house until she had gone. Where did she even go to?
Luckily for me, there was stew in the fridge so I just cooked rice and microwaved the stew. I ate the rice and stew while searching for what to watch on tv. My phone started ringing, I checked and saw it was Rachel calling.

“Hi baby, I miss you” she said as I answered.
“I miss you too” I replied, I didn’t even sound like I missed anyone.
“Then why haven’t you come to see me or asked me to come over? I want to come over, please”
“Babe, my mum came over to stay for a while that’s why I haven’t seen you since I didn’t want her to suspect anything” I lied. I saw her on Friday and she’s acting like it’s a long time, today is Sunday for Christ’s sake.
“Okay baby, I also want to ask you for something” She let out.
“What is it?”
“I need money, baby. I…I need to take care of my hair and nails. Look pretty for you” She was requesting for much because I didn’t have money. I knew it was almost time for Lara to make her demands for her child and all that. I didn’t have savings anywhere and the rent was almost due too.

“Babe…” I sighed “can…can you give me till next week?” I asked.
“But…okay, next week then. I love you”
“Love you too” I replied and ended the call. I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see Lara strolling into her room. She looked strangely calm, the baby was sleeping. Sometimes, I knew she just wanted to go anywhere and stay away from me. Well, we just couldn’t stand each other.
“Lara, go and cook your food. I’ve eaten” I shouted from the living room but I didn’t hear any response. Anyway, she would eat when she wants to.
“Ah, I’m so bored” I sighed. There was nothing to watch, no place to go maybe I would have gone to the place Lara went to. Lara came out of her room and went straight to the kitchen. I went to the kitchen, I didn’t even know why.

“Why are you quiet?” I asked her.
“Nothing” she replied. She went on searching for a small pot to cook rice.
“I’m trying to have a conversation here” I said.
“I don’t have anything to say to you”
“Yeah, you never do, boring human” I said and walked out of the kitchen. I thought I would hear her voice or something but I didn’t hear anything. I was starting to get scared, where did she go? Why was she acting strange? I went back into the kitchen.
“I’m bored” I said and she didn’t even turn to look at me.
“Wait oh, is it that they told you to not talk to me in the place you went to? Because I don’t understand all this silence”
“Ayodeji, please I am hungry and I do not have the strength for this”
“Lara, I can remember the last time you were at your parents' house you told me that you would not touch my food, what’s this?” She paused and turned to me. I was finally getting a reaction from her, she couldn’t use the baby as an excuse for eating the food because she always breastfed the baby.
She turned off the gas and came close to me.
“Sorry for eating your food, Ayo” She left the half-cooked rice and went to her room. I didn’t know she would actually leave the food, I just wanted her to say something to me.
“Lara, you can eat it. I didn’t mean it” I said outside her room hoping she heard me with the door closed. I knocked, I really felt guilty about what just happened in the kitchen.
“Ayodeji, I don’t want to eat” she replied. I was about to say something I’ve not said to her in a long time.
“I didn’t mean what I said back there, I’m sorry”
“I'm not eating, Ayo” oh well, I tried. I walked away from her. If she says she’s not eating then she’s not eating.
For the rest of the day, she got food from outside the house and didn’t come close to my kitchen. She wanted me to feel guilty but I wasn’t having it. I didn’t care if she wanted to eat or not, she would even be making the food in the house last longer so she could go to hell. How will I be begging somebody to eat and she’ll be acting up? She should get used to buying food for herself outside since she wants to see crazy.
