When I woke up in my hotel room this morning, I was already exhausted by the day that awaited me. But the exhaustion was soon replaced by excitement. After a whole year away from the Outer Banks, I was finally returning.

I've been planning this day since half a month. I've even made a schedule of my day on my phone to be sure I wouldn't forget a meeting with my friends or something. First, I needed to leave my hotel room at ten. You would think : 'If you've been away for a year, why take a hotel room in Chapel Hill when you could just take a ferry and be home sooner?'. And to this I'd reply that after a ten-hours trip between France and North Carolina, I was definitely not able to handle all the reunions that awaited me.

Although the flight was a night flight, I didn't sleep a wink. I don't know why but I've never been able to sleep on a plane. Instead, I spent almost all the flight with my headphones on, watching movies to avoid the snoring of the guy next to me. Luckily, the movies suggested in the plane weren't too bad. I started with Neighbors, a comedy with Zac Efron, my childhood crush. And then, when I was sure no one around me could see my screen, I went on the kid section and found The Princess and the Pauper.

But let's return to me in my room in Chapel Hill. After my sleepless night, I was even tired to carry my luggage to the hotel. And when I got to my room, I collapsed on my bed as soon as the door was closed. So, that's why I delayed my return home.

After leaving the hotel, I took the ferry that would take me to Kildare Island, where my parents and my sister would be waiting for me. On the dock, I was so bursting with impatience that I almost forgot half of my luggage. Fortunately, a middle-aged man who was also taking the ferry offered to help me with all of it.

After a while of searching why he seemed so familiar, I recognized him to be one of the janitors of my previous high school in Kildare. This same man helped me taking care of my luggage when we got off the ferry.

After having greatly thanked the man of his help, I finally spotted three familiar figures on the dock. While walking towards my family, I made eye-contact with my sister, and she started running in my direction to finally jump into my arms. I almost fell backwards since she's the tallest of us two, even if I'm the oldest.

A few seconds later, she was soon joined in the hug by my parents. We stood there for a while, forgetting about the people rushing on the docks all around us. Main character energy? Absolutely.

On the way home to Hollow Creek — my house — my sister Joy kept talking about all that happened in her life since I left last year. It must have been the excitement to see me physically because it's like she forgot that she'd already told me all of that on the phone or when we facetimed while I was in France. I didn't interrupt her though, not wanting to erase her beautiful smile as she told me that the boy she had a crush on also liked her.
