"Don't worry sweetie. Everything will be fine." Dad reassured me, giving me a kiss on top of the head.
We were about to make our entry to Midsummer party. I shouldn't be anxious about it, I had attended every single one since I was a child. But the idea of being surrounded by a lot of people I didn't know for some mundane party wasn't delighting me that much. And being this year's center of attention was even worse.
This year, my father was given a title of honor or something like that. What exactly? I couldn't tell. And for what? I didn't know either. I was pretty sure my father didn't know either. Only Mom could probably answer that, because she was working at Kildare tourist office.
Anyway, my speculations about my dad's title quickly disappeared when the door in front of us opened. As we stepped outside, the gathered crowd started to applause. I glanced at Joy next to me but she was too busy waving at people like the Queen of England to even notice me. Good for her, I thought. She was enjoying her moment. As for myself, I smiled shyly at people who I crossed eyes with.
After a few seconds, I spotted Sarah cheering loudly in the crowd. A relieved smile drew on my lips and I headed towards her.
"Oh my god! Lexi, you look like a goddess!" My best-friend complimented me when I reached where she was standing.
I smiled at the compliment. "Thank you! You're stunning too!" I said, admiring her. She was wearing a pearly colored dress that matched the head jewel in her radiant golden hair. With her round face and her sweet smile, she looked like an angel.
She smiled and made a little curtsy. She then focused on something, or someone, behind me and called. "John B! Come over here!".
Her boyfriend obeyed and soon enough, he was beside her, one hand at her waist. My friend greeted me and glanced at his now-frowning girlfriend. He returned her frown, but in an interrogative way. "What's wrong?" He asked finally.
"You didn't even tell her she looked amazing!" She explained, nodding in my direction.
I chuckled while looking down at my feet. Sarah was truly my number one fan.
A soundless "oh" formed on John B's lips and he turned himself to me again.
"My apologies, m'lady." He said, taking my hand and kissing the back of it. I tried my best not to laugh at his noble behavior. "You're magnificent tonight. You look like a ray of sunshine." He added, his left hand behind his back, like people from old times used to do.
I chuckled and replied on the same tone. "Thank you, gentleman. I'll take that as a compliment." I sent him a wink before bursting out laughing alongside Sarah and him.
