"Oh? It's you." She started the conversation. "I'm sorry. Did I call at the wrong time?"
"No, it's alright." A woman's deep voice from the other line answered, "You called at the perfect time, really."
"You sounded tired. I thought your next race is tomorrow?"
"Yes."
"Then why are you in that get-up of yours when bukas pa naman yung race mo?"
"There were reports of a small local robbery group causing trouble in the area that I am in right now. So I decided to give it a check myself."
"Jusko, gabi na." Leila complained, "Go home, get more sleep, or at least spend some time with your family."
"I will in an hour or two. Roving lang ako dito sandali."
"Ewan ko sa yo! If I didn't call you one night and realized that you are doing this...secret hobby of yours—"
"The things you do for love, Atty. Leila." The deep voice on the other line confidently said,
"Hah! Crazy thing to do for love." Leila sarcastically responded.
"This is why I love our phone calls."
"I pray to Jesus and the saints that you would stop this thing you're doing soon. Kahit nandito ako in this cell, I can get worried about you."
"Don't worry, Atty. Leila. I haven't broken my promise of finding a way to get you out of there."
"If your plan is to run your car over to the camp and into my cell, then no thank you."
"Except that! I wouldn't do that to my car. I just modified it. I won a race with it last night."
"Oh di ba? Tigil mo na toh. You can serve the public as yourself. Why would you still do this...thing?"
There was a few seconds of silence on the other line before the deep voice replied.
"You know Atty., some things are better off doing without people knowing who you are."
"Haynaku." Leila shrugged, "Just—take care of yourself, please. I'm not physically there to help your ass when you get caught with this..."
"I know. Thank you for the time, Atty. Leila."
"Take care—"
As she was about to acknowledge the person's name on the other line, the call dropped.
On one of the dark sidewalks in the metro, a woman was walking by alone. There was a slight drizzle and the dead lampposts haven't been replaced for years. This area was poorly lit and was a hotspot for criminals who wanted to do holdups or robberies. Unfortunately, the woman was a target of a thief duo who rode on a motorcycle as they swiftly grabbed her bag.
The motorcycle then headed into the main highway as they were a hundred meters away from the victim. They thought that their mission was a success until—
Vrooooom
A black Honda Civic was approaching them and almost catching up. It was obvious that the car was chasing them as it was picking up speed with the high beam on. As the car was already beside them, the motorcycle attempted to do a hard turn to the other side of the highway going in the opposite direction.
With a swift step on the breaks and fast movement on the gear stick, the Civic drifted to the other side of the highway still chasing the duo. Citizens began to notice the chase as the Civic long-horned to indicate that the riders in the motorcycle should be stopped at all costs.
