Crame. 1 am.
Atty. Leila's phone buzzed multiple times indicating an incoming call. She woke up from her sleep and immediately picked it up. It was an unregistered number.
"Hello?" Atty. Leila called,
"Hi Atty. Leila. Good morning. I am so sorry for calling so late." Came a female voice on the other line.
"Oh." The older woman replied, "Is this Aika? Is there anything wrong?"
"Yes po." Aika acknowledged, "I wanted to ask if you've recently talked to Mama? She hasn't went home pa kasi. I tried contacting her assistants Sherwin and Tin but their phones kept ringing lang."
"Hmm... I see..."
Atty Leila has to think fast. Of course, she didn't want to say that Leni is going around the Metro at night fighting crime and doing street races. The problem here is that she doesn't have an idea of Leni's schedule in AB so she's having a hard time what to tell Aika.
Then it hit her.
"She might be in the medical center visiting Senator Risa." Atty. Leila immediately spoke. She then remembered about the hotel collapse incident and she recently had a phone call with Risa that evening.
"Really? But it's passed visiting hours na po di ba?" Aika was puzzled,
"Well, you know your Mom." Leila replied, "If it's Senator Risa, she would find ways to meet up with her. You're not aware about the hotel incident?"
"Ahh, yes I am po. Senator Risa was in the hotel?"
"Yep. She was rushed to the hospital after escaping along with many visitors that night. Your mom might have caught the news, so she rushed to the hospital to meet her."
"I see." Aika sighed, "It's weird po kasi because she usually tells us where she is going. Gulat nalang kami tatlo dito na wala pa siya sa bahay."
"Don't worry about your Mom, Aika." Atty. Leila reassured her, "If there one person who is true to her word, it's Leni. She'll be fine. I'll let her know that you called me. Or baka uuwi na yun."
"Thanks po, Atty. Leila. Again, I'm so sorry for the trouble. Been stressed lately."
"Oh?" Atty. Leila sipped her tea, "You know you can tell me all about it."
"Haha, I have a favor to ask. Don't tell my mom about this." Aika laughed, "I'm just really annoyed that she acknowledges Racer X and what she's doing."
"Hmm...Racer X. I see. Well, she has been stopping some crime in the Metro lately. I'm just curious why you are annoyed."
"Racer X suddenly visits AB an hour before office hours and donates huge amounts of money then goes off."
"Hmm... nothing odd about that to be honest, Aika."
"Where in the world did she get that money?" Aika's voice sounded a little irritated, "I mean, we don't even know where she earned it or how she got it. If she got that money from stealing, then I think AB shouldn't be involved with it and get their hands dirty. It's frustrating kasi Mama and AB NGO just accept it with open arms."
"Mind me asking, Aika." Leila took another sip of tea before she continued. "Do you HATE Racer X?"
"I think I am a little going there na po to that feeling." Aika answered, "It just annoys me that people trust this mysterious woman without asking themselves what's her purpose for all of this."
"I completely understand your frustration. But you know what they say, iha. Never judge a book by its cover."
"I have dealt with so many people in my life, especially during the past few months, Atty. Leila. I'm not sure if I'm used to it is the right phrase, but I am just bothered with this person."
