I'd been waiting for a call from Ashley all day. When my phone finally rang, I went into the kitchen for some privacy away from my family.

"What took you so long?" I asked.

"Damn, I didn't realize how excited you were to talk to me."

I rolled my eyes, "My husband wants you over for dinner tonight and I didn't have your number to call and let you know."

"Oh sorry, I can't. I promised my friend I would go to a club with our fake IDs and get shit faced before having sex with a fifty year old pervert."

"I don't give a fuck. You're coming over for dinner. I'll pick you up at six and make sure to wear something nice."

"I was kidding, of course I'll come."

"Oh," I said, not really expecting her to agree so easily, "okay good, and wear something nice."

"And by nice, do you mean Oscar's-red-carpet nice? Or meeting-your-tinder-date-for-the-first-time-at-Applebee's nice?"

"Something in between."

"Sounds good." She paused, "Is there anything I should know to prepare me for meeting your husband?"

I thought about it for a minute, "He likes soccer, so make sure to mention it during dinner if you want brownie points."

"I don't know a thing about soccer."

"Just say something about Liverpool and he'll love you forever."

"I might just steal your husband."

I laughed, "You have a better chance of seducing me than Nick."

"Are you trying to confess something, Veronica?"

"You wish."

She laughed, "I'll see you at six then?"

"Sounds good."

I honked my horn letting Ashley know I was here and she appeared in a plain, black, skin tight, dress with matching heels; it was stunning.

"This nice enough for you?" Ashley asked, getting into the passenger's seat.

I nodded, "Yeah, you look great."

"So do you." She smiled. I was wearing a lace blue dress, but next to Ashley, I felt like a homeless person.

"Thanks." I found myself blushing as I started driving, "So, how's school?" How's school? Seriously Veronica? What the fuck is wrong with you today?

She chuckled, "It's alright. How's work?"

"Good."

There was silence before she spoke, "So why are you acting all weird and awkward?"

"I don't know."

"Veronica." She said in the classic motherly tone.

I caved and answered truthfully, "Because you look beautiful and I look like the fucking kid from Wonder."

She laughed, "Okay first of all, I'm pretty sure if you say that in public you'll get jumped and have your house burned down by an angry mob. And second, I think you look gorgeous, so shut the fuck up and stop being weird."

I smiled at the compliment and pulled into my driveway.

"ASHLEY!" The kids came running to greet her when we walked through the front door.

"Hey guys!" She knelt down to talk to them, "It's good to see you two again."

"We missed you." Abby said.
