Chapter 23: "Sometimes you make me feel like 'us' can have another shot, but whenever I take a step closer, you make me realize that we never did."
"Penelope, are you done?"
My mouth curved into a smile as mom stepped inside my room, looking gorgeous as ever. She arrived from Canada two days ago. It's been 3 years since she last visited the Philippines though I fly to Canada at least twice a year to see her.
"Almost, mom."
She walked towards me and touched my face. "You look so lovely, anak."
Napangiti ako sa narinig. "Talaga, 'My?"
I wore a white backless cami casual plunge neck. As for my hair, it was tied in a ponytail. Vash is taking us out for dinner. Matter of fact, it was Vash who helped me pick up my mom at the airport at 4 in the morning.
Mommy hugged me and said, "You look exactly the woman Vash should marry." My eyes widened. "I hope he sees that."
"Mom! What are you talking about!" My face turned deep red.
She just gave me a soft smile. "Nasa labas na si Vash," she said and turned her back.
I fanned my face using my hands because it was too red. I had had to take several deep breaths to compose myself before I went out of my room.
My plan was to take Vash's breath way which was why I exerted so much effort into my look tonight. However, this man is just so sophisticated and exceedingly gorgeous that he always manages to take my breath away instead.
Napalunok ako ng pasadahan niya ako ng tingin. But I braved it out, smiled, and turned around. "How do I look, Chumz?"
"Hindi ka kaya magkapulmonya niyan? Litaw na litaw ang likod mo. Tapos yung harap.." He grimaced. "Konting yuko mo lang, kita na lahat sa'yo. How about putting on a jacket, Chumz?"
Unti-unting nalusaw ang ngiti ko sa narinig. How could he? I thought he'd find me beautiful. I glared at him and said, "Exag ka! Tara na nga!"
Tinapunan ko siya ng irap bago ako nagpatiunang lumabas ng pinto. How insensitive of him! He had no idea how much time I spent on preparing for this dinner night.
On our way to the hotel where we'd have dinner, he pissed me off even more by insisting that I should put on something to cover my body thus, I snapped at him, "What's your problem with my dress? Anong masama kung kita ang cleavage ko? May ipapakita naman ako ah!"
He scoffed. "Just because you have it, doesn't mean you have to flaunt it."
"Nakakaganda siya, bakit ba!"
He breathed out and said calmly, "Sexy clothes don't make a person beautiful. Kung maganda ka talaga kahit balutin mo pa yung buong katawan mo, maganda ka pa rin."
I was dumbfounded. "Are you saying na hindi ako maganda?"
He turned to me with a knotted forehead. "What? Kelan ko sinabi na hindi ka maganda?"
"Ano yung sinabi mo kanina kung ganon?"
Mom broke her silence. "Kids, relax. Let's not ruin a beautiful night." Pareho kaming natahimik ni Vash. Then he turned to mommy and apologized. "Mauna na akong pumasok sa loob. Huwag kayong lalabas ng sasakyan na ito na hindi nagbabati," she said firmly and got out of the car.
I didn't even notice that we had already arrived at the hotel. We were enveloped in silenced as neither of us didn't seem to know what to say. In my case, I was too embarrassed for acting childishly.
