Amaro Black
I rested my head on my pillow trying to slow my breathing after returning from a long run. My mind was still full of visions of the lush forest; nothing could clear my mind and calm me down like a run could. The feeling of allowing your mind and body to be free as you ran through the forest at speeds that caused the surroundings to turn into a blur around you, nothing in the world was better than that feeling. There was a knock at the front door and I heard my father greet Koda, Harlin, and Tadeo when they walked in. I got up from bed and headed out to the living room to find them. They were all three sitting on the couch in the living room when I got there; my father had already made his way back to the kitchen.
"Hey guys," I said walking in before making myself comfortable on the recliner.
"Ready to start your new babysitting job tomorrow? Koda asked jokingly.
I let a warning growl escape my throat. Hell no I wasn't ready for that! Why my dad assigned me to watch over the new girl and her human father was beyond me. I didn't want anything to do with it. I had far better things to do with my time then to watch over a half human and her human father. I know that Mr. Staton had a lot of information on vampires and was here to help us fight the over population of them that seemed to be growing everyday; but how did I manage to get stuck looking after the girl? Not only was I put in charge of protecting the girl, I had to do it without her finding out I was a werewolf. She had no idea that she was part werewolf; she didn't even know that they existed. To her werewolves and vampires were just fictional monsters. This was really going to suck!
"Well I don't care what you guys think, I can't wait to meet her." Tadeo said, breaking me out of my internal rant.
"You just can't wait to have someone new to annoy," Koda said with a grin, giving him a quick jab to the arm.
"Well if it keeps him off my back for a while I'm all for it," Harlin added with a smirk.
"Screw you guys!" Tadeo said as he got up and headed to the door.
"Hey! Where do you think you are going?"Harlin asked as Tadeo grabbed the door knob.
"For a run!" Tadeo shouted before slamming the door behind him.
"You better be back for lunch or mom will be pissed," Harlin shouted at the door knowing that Tadeo could still hear him.
Tadeo is only eight and is Harlin's little brother. He wasn't really all that annoying but he could be sometimes; so any time we had the chance to annoy him back we took it. I was the oldest out the group, I just turned eighteen and was about to start my senior year of high school. Koda was still seventeen but he was going to be a senior too; Harlin was sixteen and going to be a junior. We went to a high school in the nearest town. Most of our pack went to a tribal school on the reservation; but we needed to have some of us using the nearby town school to keep an eye on the vampire population. The guys headed home for lunch a few hours later then we met up again before bed to do patrols of the territory. After doing my normal patrol and making a quick pass by the house the Staton's would be staying at to make sure there were no new scents around the area I headed home and went to bed.
I woke up the next morning to my father banging on my door. He was yelling something about getting ready and not being late. I really wasn't listening; my mind couldn't focus right now. I was out late patrolling last night and didn't get much sleep so I was not in the mood to hear my father's complaining. I managed to roll myself out of bed and get into the shower. I let the cool water run over my body helping me wake up. After my shower I headed out to the kitchen and sat at the table with my father.
Harlin, Koda, and Tadeo showed up a few minutes later and we headed over to the Staton's house. We thought it was best just to have my father and I go in and the other three wait outside in wolf form. After Mr. Staton invited us in and took us to the living room to talk, I vaguely listened to the conversation between my father and Mr. Staton and focused on the other scent in the house. Something about it was drawing me into it. I could smell it was getting closer. My eyes moved to the scent to find a girl with long brown hair, and emerald green eyes peeking around the corner. She was beautiful; was this the girl that I was suppose to watch over? If so I guess it wouldn't be that bad after all. The only way to find out was to ask.
"Would you like to join us or are you just going to continue to spy on us?" I asked. I watched a look of surprise wash over her face when she realized I was talking to her; then she lowered her head and walked into the room. Her father turned around in his chair to introduce her.
"This is my daughter Aliyah," he said holding out his hand to her. "Aliyah this is Anaru Black," he gestured to my father, "and this is his son Amaro," gesturing now to me.
"It's nice to meet you," She said extending her hand for each of us to shake before sitting down in a chair next to her father.
I couldn't shake the feeling in my hand after touching hers; it was like fire and ice all at the same time. Every inch of my skin tingled where she had touched it. It was weird I had never felt anything like that before in my life. I found myself wondering if maybe it was just some static shock but why hasn't the feeling left my hand yet? I turned my attention to my father who was explaining the rules as the tingling feeling finally started to fade away.
"Don't kill things, and stay on the grass. That's pretty simple I think I got it," she said trying to keep the sarcastic tone out of her voice, but it was clear to me it was there.
"Is there anything else you needed from me, I was going to go outside and read for a while?" She asked; looking like she couldn't wait to get out of here.
"That is all," my father responded. She grabbed a book from the coffee table, and headed for the door; her hand froze on the handle and she starred out the door.
"Umm, there are dogs out here." She said turning around to look at us confused.
"They are not dogs, they're wolves!" I said; the anger was clear in my voice as I stated to get off the couch; my father caught my arm and pulled me back down. I held back the growl that was threatening to escape my chest. I don't know what changed I just felt a sudden burst of anger when she called my friends dogs. I know she doesn't know any better, but I just couldn't help myself from getting upset.
"Ok, well do the wolves bite?" She asked rudely; clearly she sensed my anger and return the same emotion.
"Not unless they think you are a threat." I said annoyed with her rude tone. 'I should link Harlin, and Koda and have them scare the shit out of you when you walk out there bitch', I thought to myself.
"Great, thanks for the reassurance," she said smugly and opened the door.
I watched her nervously walk between Koda and Harlin outside the door. I guess you couldn't blame her for being nervous, anyone who sees a wolf as big as ours for the first time has the right to be nervous. Harlin and Koda didn't even bother to look at her as she walked out the door. They were nervous about having their Alpha, and future Alpha in the house with a stranger. Although we all knew that the Staton's were no risk to us, our wolves weren't so sure. There was a constant struggle for power between our human half and our wolf half. While our human half was more willing to trust people, our wolf half didn't trust anyone but his pack. I watched the girl walk over and sink into the hammock then turned my attention back to my father and Mr. Staton.
