Idina and Kristen were playing outside on a brisk autumn day.
Meg and Chad approached them and Meg put her hands over Kristen's eyes.
"Hi, girls" she said.
"Mummy!" said Kristen.
"It's fall, girlies. And that means it's time for the fall harvest" said Meg.
"What's harvest?" said Idina.
"It means we pick the vegetables from our garden that are ripe and ready to eat" said Meg.
"Eat?" said Kristen.
"Uh-uh-uh, Kristen. The vegetables we're picking today aren't for eating" said Chad.
"Huh?" said Idina and Kristen together.
"They're for decorating. I'll show you" said Chad.
He and Meg led the two girls to an outdoor table.
"Remember this, Kristen? This is the leaf collage we made together" said Chad.
Kristen nodded her head.
"And here's the turkey Idina made out of paper. Isn't he cute?" said Meg.
Kristen sniffed the paper turkey then blew a raspberry.
"Gobble gobble. Gobble gobble" Meg joked.
The two little girls laughed at their mother's joke.
"And here's the last decoration for our table. The horn of plenty" said Meg.
Kristen took the horn of plenty and tried to play it like a trumpet.
"It's not that kind of horn, Kristen" Chad laughed.
"No it's not. Plenty means lots and lots. We're gonna fill the horn with vegetables from our garden. That's how we remind ourselves how lucky we are to have so much delicious food to eat" Meg explained.
"Eat?" said Idina.
"I told you, girls. We're not eating the vegetables. They're for decoration" said Chad.
Meg led the girls to the vegetable patch so they could see what's ready to pick.
"Do you know what these are, girlies?" said Meg.
All the girls could see was green leaves.
"They're carrots" said Meg.
"Huh?" said Idina.
"The carrot part is underneath the ground. You have pull the leaves to get them out" said Meg.
She pulled out two dirty carrots.
"Eat!" said Kristen.
"Not now. I'll just clean the dirt off" said Chad.
He hosed the carrots clean and handed them to the girls.
"Aren't they beautiful? Would you two take them to the table?" said Meg.
Idina and Kristen obliged.
"Eat" Kristen whispered.
She and Idina each ate one carrot and left the leaves in the horn of plenty.
When they returned, their parents were picking tomatoes.
"They're both so beautiful, it's hard to decide" said Meg.
"Idina, Kristen, you're back. Look at these terrific tomatoes" said Chad.
"Eat?" said Kristen.
"Kristen, sweet, I told you. These aren't for eating. They're for decorating" said Chad.
"Well, I think they're both beautiful so they should both go to the table. Now be careful with them" said Meg.
The girls took the tomatoes back to the table and ate them.
They replaced them with red spinning tops in the horn.
Then the girls went back to where Meg and Chad were.
"What do you think I have behind my back, girls?" said Chad.
The two little girls tried to look.
"No peeking" Chad giggled.
"Just show them, sweetie" said Meg.
Chad revealed the vegetables behind his back.
"One is a cucumber and the other is a zucchini" he said.
"They look alike don't they? But they both taste yummy and will look great in my horn of plenty" said Meg.
Idina and Kristen took the vegetables to the table.
"Eat!" said Idina.
Kristen devoured the cucumber and Idina gobbled up the zucchini.
The girls replaced the eaten vegetables with green race car toys.
When they got there, Meg had just polished a pepper.
"You two are just in time. I've polished the prized pepper I plucked from the perfect pepper plant" Meg giggled.
The girls took the pepper back to the table and split it.
When Meg looked back at the horn, she noticed the girls' toys in it.
Chad knew exactly what the cause of it was.
"Kristen. Idina. How many of our vegetables did you eat?" he said.
"Plenty" said Idina and Kristen together.
