It was a lovely sunny day so the Stuart family had lunch outside.
Meg had just given Idina and Kristen some lemonade.
"There's nothing like a cold drink on a hot day" said Meg.
Just then, she saw the vegetable plants start to shrivel up.
"Oh my goodness. Chad, look. The vegetables are thirsty too" said Meg.
"Oh dear. We'd best get the hose and give them some water" said Chad.
Idina was already on the job. She grabbed the hose and brought it to her mother.
"Here's the hose, Mummy" she said.
"Oh thank you, Idina" said Meg.
Kristen turned on the water and the hose got Meg's sundress wet.
"Kristen!" Meg snapped.
Idina and Kristen were both laughing.
"It's not funny, girls" said Meg.
"Well, it does look a bit funny" said Chad.
Meg gave into her husband's words and stifled her giggles.
"Well, at least I'm cooled off" said Meg.
She gave the hose back to Idina and said "Would you and Kristen keep watering while I put the lemonade away?"
Idina nodded and pointed the hose at the dry vegetables.
Kristen was getting really hot, so she took the hose and gave Idina a look that asked for it.
Idina let her sister have the hose and Kristen started to fill her kiddy pool with water and put on her floaties.
"Wet" she said.
Meg came out and saw what she was doing.
"No, Kristen. You can't go swimming now" said Meg.
"No?" said Kristen.
"Not yet at least. It's safe to wait at least thirty minutes after eating before swimming. If you don't, you could get a cramp in your tummy. You wouldn't want to get a cramp in your tummy, would you, Kristen?" said Chad.
Kristen shook her head no.
"Good girl. Anyhow, we need to water our vegetables first. See, girls? They're getting all shriveled up" said Meg.
Chad then noticed the flowers were starting to wilt as well.
"Blimey! It looks like our flowers are thirsty too" he said.
"Oh my! I'll go get the extra piece of hose. You girls see that the vegetables get a drink first" said Meg.
When her parents weren't looking, Kristen sprayed the hose's water into her kiddy pool in a long-distance shot.
"Wet!" she said.
Meg came back and noticed.
"Oh, Kristen! Your father told you. You have to wait to swim safely. We can fill your pool after we water the flowers" she said.
"We may need to do a bit more, Meg. There are a lot of weeds in this garden" said Chad.
Idina pulled some weeds out of the garden.
"Very good, Idina. You know, it's easier to pull the weeds when the dirt is wet" said Chad.
"It is?" said Idina.
Meg grabbed a bucket for the weeds, but Kristen had another idea.
She filled the bucket with water then dumped it in her kiddy pool.
"Oh, Kristen, you're so silly. I know you want to go swimming, but you have to wait just a bit longer" said Chad.
"Wet" said Kristen.
"Later, sweet" said Chad lovingly.
"Here, Kristen. You love digging in the dirt. See if you can find us some treasure" said Meg handing Kristen a shovel.
Kristen nodded and started digging.
"It just occurred to me, Meg" said Chad.
"What, Chad?" said Meg.
"Maybe the plants are hungry too" said Chad.
"Ooh, maybe. I'll go get some organic plant food to mix into the soil while we're digging" said Meg.
"And Kristen, this time, please leave the hose in the garden. Okay?" said Chad.
Kristen tried to do as told, but she was so hot.
She dug a hole in the dirt and filled it with water from the hose.
Then she jumped into the hole herself.
"Kristen, look at you! You're filthy" said Meg.
She hosed Kristen clean, and Kristen was so happy to finally get wet.
"Wet!" Kristen laughed.
Then Chad got an idea. An idea that would help Kristen get wet safely.
He took out a sprinkler from the shed and connected it to the hose.
Now, the garden was getting a drink and Kristen was getting sprinkled with water.
"There you are, Kristen. Now you and the garden can get wet at the same time. And no tummy aches" said Chad.
Kristen gave her father a big hug to thank him.
"Wet!" she squealed.
