"Look what the cat dragged in."

Steve leaned against the white counter of Scoops Ahoy with his chin in his hands and sailor hat tipped to one side. Robin welcomed you with a bright, mischievous grin from her place on the red vinyl bench of a booth. It was their final week of shifts before they'd move onto bigger things: Family Video. The ice cream shop was empty, as to be expected on a rainy Wednesday in November.

"Don't sound so happy to see me," you poked at Steve's comment.

"Excuse mister cranky over here." Robin bent her thumb to the boy. "He's envious of the good review I've given Eddie."

You slid into the booth across from Robin, eyeing Steve amused while he scoffed.

"So, what'd you think? Good, right?" you fished for more, voice excited with the initiation of girl talk.

"Crazy good. He's nothing like what everyone says...pretty much the opposite," her voice rasped excitedly and she swiveled to face you, bouncing at the feminine gossip. "I see why you and Dustin gush over the guy. I mean, he's just, so....so..."

"Lovable?" you filled in with a proud smile.

Steve rolled his eyes and slid open the glass door of the ice cream display to scoop himself some sorbet. He dragged the spoon across his tongue, sitting in on you two's girlish exchange; it's not like he had a choice.

"Exactly. I told Steve that I can't believe he remembered we had band together. I'm quiet and plain and forgettable, but he knew right away! No guy remembers shit like that. And he can talk about anything! He rambles like me but in a charming way. It's hard to believe he's really just that cool."

"Mhm," you agreed. The tops of your cheeks grew sore from smiling too hard; you couldn't help it though. It was fun to gush over Eddie. "Told you. He's pretty awesome."

"First I have to listen to Dustin rave about his new friend Eddie, and now you two are swooning over the guy," Steve bitched. He pushed off the counter and paced in lazy circles, seemingly talking to the universe. "I get it, I'm being punished. Great! Stealing my 'best hair' title, my friends' hearts...that's just great!"

The strawberry-blonde girl made a funny face at the male's woe and you two giggled, trying to stay quiet to be able to watch this breakdown longer.

Beginning that first Monday back, you started to sit with the Hellfire boys at lunch, as Eddie had advised. He was pleased to have you there and to be able to keep his watch on you; it wasn't easy to ignore the daggers Jason and Andy had been shooting at you two all week.

Dustin was a little disappointed that he had to scootch down to give you the reserved seat on Eddie's left. But Gareth wouldn't budge on giving up his spot and Eddie insisted you be closest to him, so the freshman agreed to move. It was sweet how much the younger boy admired Eddie and would do anything for him.
