"So much for your 'no skipping until after spring break' rule."

Eddie's lips curved up smugly after he said it. A chill gust of wind blew eastward, lifting his tangle of curls to twirl about. His shining eyes held yours from across the top of the picnic table where you sat.

It was still way too cold to be comfortably sitting outside, but there you were in the woods behind Hawkins High. A brown jacket sagged oversized on your frame to keep you heated. Your boy had on his leather moto jacket that you once said you liked better than his signature one.

"Because you used the freakin' puppy dog eyes!" you whined. On the wooden slats, your fingertips traced the etchings and imperfections.

Eddie's mouth curled up more until his cheeks dimpled. "Hey, you could've stayed in class without me."

"No way. You know I can't resist those." You gestured up to his big, brown eyes that were holding you within them.

"That's exactly why I use them."

He fluttered his eyelashes, blinking rapidly to make himself look innocent and sweet. You bit down on your lip that wanted to quirk up in a smile and leaned forward across the tabletop to pull a joint from Eddie's jacket pocket.

The boy gaped at you placing it between your lips and flicking open his lighter.

"What?" you muffled around the paper filter.

"Nothin'."

The smile smeared across his charming face told that it was a lie. His head was full of thoughts he didn't want to verbalize. In the short weeks that you'd been dating, Eddie's mind was saturated with sappy things far more than he'd care to admit.

He knew you had a soft spot for romance, but if he said everything that came to his mind, he feared it might scare you. The problem was that the boy had never experienced love like this before. Hell, he didn't believe romantic love existed before this.

So now it was like his emotions and feelers were being cranked up a hundredfold. He was constantly being rushed with these intense feelings and cheesy thoughts, and he had no idea what to do with them.

It seemed like announcing every single one to you would be intense. He was too concerned about doing the wrong thing to take chances on that; he just got you and he can't lose you already.

What he was really thinking about at that moment was how comfortable you were compared to the first time. You two were sitting at the picnic table where you first met as strangers, only now you were entirely familiar with each other's every quirk and secret. September had introduced you in these very woods not all that long ago, even though it felt like years you'd known one another.
