Whack!
Eddie dropped his head onto the hard of his desk after receiving his history unit test back. You moved your eyes away from the ninety-two scrawled atop your packet at the dramatic action. The boy's arms lay slack around his crown of frizz, paper trapped between the desktop and his smushed face.
"That bad?" you winced.
The pair of you had put in extra hours of studying in hopes of giving Eddie's grade a needed boost. He seemed to have made strides in understanding the material, so thinking about him getting knocked down a peg by a failing score sucked.
Slowly, he lifted his face to look at you, a red spot spread on his forehead from smacking it. In one slow motion, his frown dissipated and then curled up into a huge grin. Smile lines and dimples decorated his cheeks as he held the paper up in front of him.
"C minus, man!" he exclaimed proudly.
"Holy shit, Eddie!" A joyous look electrified the air between you. He released the test as you grabbed it, taking in the big red letter and flipping the pages. "You did it!"
He reclined back in the chair, clasping his arms behind his head and crossing one leg over the other as if he was super relaxed.
"Better watch out, smartypants. Next, I'll be in the A range with you," he said, arrogantly. You smirked sideways at him and he passed the look back. With a click of your tongue, you pushed the test on his chest, forcing him to sit up from his position.
"Don't get cocky, now. Got a ways to go before you're there, big boy."
Eddie nearly choked on his spit.
The bell rang, saving him from having to collect himself and respond like a normal, totally-not-turned-on person. You knew what you'd done, smiling to yourself as you stood and began to walk to the door. The metalhead scrambled after to fall in line with your steps. You went on like nothing.
"I'm really proud of you," you told him. You meant it, too. He nervously chuckled at the kind words.
"I couldn't have done it without you." He bumped his arm against yours as the pair of you strode down the hallway. "So...victory lap in the woods?"
You had to look up at his face, for he had inches of height on you. He bounced his eyebrows in suggestion and you rolled your eyes. A short laugh was your answer as you took his hand in yours, leading him out to the picnic table you two had claimed.
Together, you smoked a celebratory blunt and filled the serenity of the woods with your silly conversation and laughter.

As promised, Eddie did finish the repairs on your car early in the week. He was so excited to give it back to you, boasting that it rides like a dream. You were glad to have back the freedom that came with a vehicle, but you were bummed that the curly-haired boy wouldn't be driving you around anymore. A broken car had guaranteed you would spend at least two fifteen-minute rides a day with him.
