The third Thursday of the month came in the blink of an eye. With your two days of suspension, it seemed like you were barely in school again before break started.
You weren't particularly excited for Thanksgiving, since you didn't get to celebrate the way everyone else did. It was one of your biggest envies of the average American family: a big feast in a cozy house, sharing gratefulness to be with each other. With just you and your mother, that never happened.
You had stopped traveling to visit family for the holidays after your father passed. So each year, you would make a small-scale dinner for the two of you to eat separately. Cooking was something you enjoyed and were good at since you had to fend for yourself growing up. You found joy in making all the different dishes and seeing them laid out in an aesthetic spread.
Even if you did sit and eat alone, then pack up the rest for your mother to eat after work; there was something comforting about it.
Eddie had asked you about your Thanksgiving plans. You figured he was just making conversation, but really he wanted to make sure you wouldn't be spending it alone. When he heard that you usually don't do anything, he formed a plan to make sure this year was different.
The weekend leading into break, you had gone by the trailer to pick Eddie up for some record store shopping. You entered the living room to find Wayne sitting on the recliner to lace his work boots. His wrinkles scrunched up when he saw you and gave a close-mouth smile.
"Hi, Wayne," you greeted.
"Hi, darlin'." He looked back to his laces. "Eddie'll be out in a minute. You know him and that hair."
"Oh yeah," you chuckled. The brunette was a big fan of looking his best (especially for you) so he took his time getting ready.
"Doing anything exciting for Thanksgiving?" the old man queried. He disguised it well on his face, but Eddie had already told him your situation.
"Not really. With just my mom and I, we don't do much."
"Eddie and I would be happy to have you if you'd like to join us."
"Really?" The invitation caught you off guard but made you terribly happy. Your whole face lifted in glee. Eddie came down the hall smiling like a fool already, having heard the conversation.
" 'Course. As long as you don't mind eating off paper plates," Wayne said with a hearty chuckle.
Your mouth remain in a cheek-tingling smile as Eddie came up behind you, placing both calloused hands on your shoulders.
"I don't mind."

On Wednesday you had excitedly prepared to make all the sides you could for Thanksgiving dinner. Using what you had in the house and a few things you were able to buy at the store, you planned to bring a few dishes to the Munson's. They didn't expect you to, but you wanted to; gratitude for being able to spend the holiday with them.
