It was odd to be hearing birds singing at the very tail-end of the year. Being awoken by a chorus of repetitive chirps was not how you expected to start another winter morning; perhaps they were cheering you on. Get up, have a better day. Your eyes squinted against the brightness peeking around the blinds.

Consciousness melted away the haze of sleep as your awareness shifted to the weight of a strong arm over your torso. You rolled your head to face Eddie beside you.

The brunette was sleeping soundly, pink mouth opened slightly as he breathed in and out. You could never get sick of seeing him like this: entirely at peace, beautiful as ever.

He'd moved his head onto your pillow, sparing a couple of inches between your faces. You two were naturally clingy with each other, Eddie even more so now that you had been apart for days. This was the most sleep he had gotten all week. He finally felt okay to rest, knowing you were safe.

You let yourself reach a hand up to his soft face, moving a piece of fringe away from his closed eyes with a delicate touch. A dull ache thrummed in your chest as a result of the action; one that you would take now while he was unaware, but had to hold back with the new tension between you.

Just teenagers having fun. His words repeated like a mantra as you tried to make yourself believe it.

It echoed in your head that morning as you slipped out of Eddie's grasp. You stared at yourself in the bathroom mirror for a long while. Though your eyes were sunken with dark circles, the color had returned to your face.

Even when you weren't on the best terms, there was no denying that Eddie was the cure. He breathed life back into you, and you did the same to him.

While the metalhead didn't believe in fate, true love, and all that other bullshit, you did. You truly, truly did. Maybe it was overly optimistic of you, influenced by the music and movies you grew up on, but you always held onto believing. That hopeless romantic inside you was partially why you struggled to stop loving Eddie as deeply as you did.

In the back of your mind, you'd always thought that you and Eddie were meant to find each other. It was written in the stars, and the universe pushed you two together. Maybe you knew him in another life because that's what it felt like.

Both your hearts were heavy, weighed down by sadness but also the love you had to give; it seemed you were meant to pour that into the other. Fate wanted you to heal each other.

You jumped at the feeling of two arms reaching around your waist.

"Didn't mean to scare you," Eddie grumbled in your ear. His body was warm from just leaving the bed as he pulled you back against him.

"Sorry, I was just..." your gentle voice trailed off. You stared ahead at the hot coffee you put on being dripped into its glass pot. "Just thinking."

The boy wanted to ask what was on your mind, but he knew you wouldn't tell him if he did. Instead, he kept holding you. He bent down enough to nuzzle his head in the crook of your neck. You two stayed like that a moment before he lift his face to kiss your temple.
