LILIYA GLANCED TOWARDS THE boy beside her, he was playing fetch with Skipper, and he had a huge smile on his face.
Liliya's stomach turned at Billy's smile, the boy threw the stick once more before glancing at the girl beside him.
Her cheeks flushed and she avoided eye contact, Billy gave a small smile and interlocked their hands.
"Are you okay?" He asked, eyebrows furrowing, Liliya's eyes widened at the contact and coughed awkwardly.
"Yeah, j..just thinking." She spoke quickly, clearing her throat out of embarrassment, Billy raised an eyebrow.
"Thinking about what?"
"Thinking about what I'm going to do after school," she lied. She already knew what she was going to do, she just wanted to know what Billy would do.
She was taking Bruce's advice.
"What do you want to do?" She asked Billy, her cheeks still flushed from their interlocked hands.
"I want to get a good job, I want to be a professional baseball player, but realistically maybe a teacher...? I know I want to one day get married and have children but..." He trailed off, staring at the floor.
"Go on," Liliya spoke, her voice nothing more than a whisper as Skipper comes running towards Billy with the stick.
He takes the stick off of Skipper and throws it again for her to fetch, "It's nothing... What do you want to do when you're older?"
Liliya sighed and glanced towards the cloudy sky, "I want to leave this town. For good."
"For good?" Billy repeats, his voice quiet.
Liliya nods, a small smile on her face, "it's been my dream ever since I was young, I want to get out of this suffocating town."
"Where would you go?" He asked, an eyebrow raised.
"Anywhere other than here. Somewhere far far away. Preferably."
Billy cracked a grin, "what about a job?" He asked, the redhead blinked for a moment, deep in thought.
"I've never thought about it... maybe an author."
"A travelling author," the sandy-blonde boy grinned, Liliya turned to the boy and raised an eyebrow content with what he said.
"Yeah, okay, a travelling author, that doesn't sound too bad."
"When you get lots of money can you share it with me?" The boy asked, earning a snicker from the redhead.
"No."
"Why not!?" The boy exclaimed, subconsciously letting go of her hand to stretch his arms out.
Liliya frowned slightly at the missing warmth but pushed it back with a scoff, "you don't deserve it."
Billy chuckled and shook his head before going into deep thought, a silence passing through the two. Skipper had gone off somewhere to play with the stick on her own, leaving the two alone.
"Is that why you don't make friends?" Billy asked, breaking the silence. Liliya snapped her head towards the boy, she wanted to feel offended, but she couldn't because she knew he was right.
"...Yeah..." A sigh escaped her lips as she leaned against the brick wall, "I'd hate leaving my friends..."
"What about Bruce?" Billy asked, his eyebrows raised.
"He reckons he's coming with me."
"And if he changes his mind?" Billy inquired.
"Then I leave on my own... without him." She swallowed any building saliva in her mouth and sighed once again.
She hated thinking about leaving Bruce, she loved him too much. She wouldn't know what to do if she left without Bruce, she couldn't do it.
Bruce is her rock.
The thing that grounds her.
The one person she could never hate in this town, no matter how hard she tried.
The two teens heard Skipper bark from down the hill, they glanced at one another, smiles taking over their faces as Skipper strutted towards the two.
Skipper ran passed them and onto the street, signalling she's had enough for the day.
The two began walking back to Billy's house to drop Skipper off and hang out for the rest of the day. Billy was so deep in thought that he didn't even realise his surroundings.
Of course, he was fine with Liliya's choice of leaving, it's her choice, but it hurt to hear she'd leave.
