"Have you heard anything?"A few weeks since my birthday getaway have passed. Sophia and I have been on lockdown in the house since we've gotten back and have yet to see anyone but my mom. Her mom left a few days ago, leaving just as awkward as she came.
"About..."
"From your friend! The one from the beach?"
Oh. Bobby.
"No. I haven't. If I had..." I give her a look, exhaling out a frustrated huff as I lose track of where I just was in a my book. "I would have already of told you. Now will you let me read? It's the only escape I have right now."
"No. Because we're going somewhere."
Going somewhere?
"We've been grounded since befor the trip...What do you mean going somewhere?"
"I mean your mom has given us the okay to go to a party tonight. She doesn't want us drinking but she knows how important it is to enjoy your summers before they disappear."
"My mom said that?"
"Yep."
"Really?"
"Really."
Doubtful.
"Did she say this before she left for work at four o'clock this morning?"
"No she called about an hour ago while you were up here enjoying your escape."
"And I didn't hear the phone ring?"
"Nope. Too busy reading...Matilda" she pauses, looking at me with slight judgment. "Really?"
"It's one of my favorites from when I was younger. Are you going to tell me what party you plan to drag me too?"
"Nope."
She smiles, taking my book and setting aside. I huff as she grabs my hands and pulls me up off my bed. Sophie starts shoving me towards my bathroom where I have yet to shower for three days.
"Now. Take a shower, make sure to shave everything, and use your good soap. I'm going to pick out a few outfits to choose from before going and getting ready myself, okay?"
"Yes, Ma'am...."
I sigh, shutting the door before turning around and heading for my shower. I switch on the water with a sigh, my messy hair falling into my face. As I straighten, I catch myself in the mirror. My eyes hold bags, my clothes a wreak and disheveled. My blonde locks are tied up in a sorry excuse for a bread with countless flyaways.
I really do need this shower...
——
"There she is!"
I'm pulled into a tight hug as soon as I walk into the house. Sophia laughs behind me as I'm spun around in the surprisingly strong arms. Music blasts all around, countless faces I've seen before blurring. My feet touch the hardwood floor as my lips turn into a smile.
"Finally out of the slammer?"
"I guess. Why? Been missing me?"
Stu laughs, slinging an arm over my shoulders. He leads me through the crowd who all either smile and wave, or give questioning looks of who I am. I guess that comes with being from a large school district.
"So...with our guests of honor now arrived.." He pauses, cheers heading their way. "The fiesta can finally commence!"
More cheers fill the house, making both Sophia and I laugh. We share a look, my cousin shaking her head before more giggles leave her. I let Stu pull me along towards the kitchen. Sophia follows right behind us, greeting people as we pass.
