Matilda pictured herself as a massive rift in her parent's relationship because of their ideas of bringing her up were completely different, with her mother being extremely strict and her dad... less strict. It kept Matilda up at night all of summer 1984, a guilty conscience in feeling responsible for Rebecca having to stay on and repeat senior year along with trying to cope with their parent's sudden separation.
Their dad had moved to the trailer park in Hawkins and had let their mom stay in the home they grew up in.
Rebecca hardly visited her dad because she hated the trailer park, partly because the trailer was so much smaller and because Eddie Munson lived in a trailer in the park. She continued knocking it into Matilda's head that she should continue to stay away from the Hellfire club, especially after the sudden mysterious deaths of Barbara Holland and Bob Newby.
So she did - Matilda had been avoiding them like the time she'd accidentally disrupted a wasps nest and ran for her life.
Matilda figured she'd caused enough trouble since joining high school - watching Rebecca's grades get lower as their parents split... She was also afraid of what would happen if she was ever caught near the boys from Hellfire... what Rebecca or her mom would say.
Matilda played ball in a different, less her way... She joined the cheer team alongside Chrissy and did her best to fit in, she even dyed my hair the same color as Rebecca and her mom, a very dark brown, to look exactly like them. Matilda made an effort to get along with the other cheerleaders and the basketball team and Heather finally accepted her, they all did.
She did it because she didn't want her parents or sister to worry about her - so she wouldn't be a distraction from Rebecca doing her best this year.
Alex graduated without her, completely shattering Rebecca's dream of graduating and going to college with him... he'd gone and she'd be a year late, it completely broke her heart but Alex promised her that it wouldn't change anything between them.
The night before term started in September, Matilda couldn't sleep because she just felt Rebecca's embarrassment of having to walk into Hawkins High, everyone's eyes on her because they knew that she must've failed the previous year - something her elder sister had never known... being a failure. It was a massive deal to her, her perfect reputation on very thin ice, especially because Eddie Munson also had to repeat senior year alongside her...
