Matilda ceased contact with her new friends Max, Eleven, Lucas, Mike, Will, Dustin, Steve, Robin, Jonathan and Nancy after her dismissal from hospital and back into the inescapable grasp of her mom.
Max had visited Matilda in hospital, leaving a bundle of candy on the side-table. Matilda's mom saw this candy and threw it in the trash while Matilda had been asleep.
Matilda's mom continued to search for Rebecca because no bodies were found in the mall fire, even after Rebecca's funeral and the memorial service for all of those who had gone missing since the Fourth of July, assumed dead.
Matilda refused to speak to anybody at the funeral and memorial service... she also refused to leave her room afterwards and for the foreseeable future. It was the sadness and anger she felt, knowing the way that her sister, her dad, Billy and all the victims had died... a horrible, unfathomable death.
It was eating Matilda alive...
