Matilda's POV            11th October, 1985

I dragged myself out of bed with a groan due to the ache in my ribs - every step to my closet, taking out my casual uniform for a day of work at Licorice Pizza Plaza under Eddie's leather jacket, putting a little make-up on while sat at my vanity desk, walking downstairs... it was all an effort.

An effort I didn't mind because they reminded me of the night I had with Eddie, full of laughter and jokes... I couldn't wait for him to pick me up from work today.

Entering the living room, where mom was still spread across the couch sleeping, was a reminder of my reality, how everything had changed since that night - the Fourth of July - I realised just how much I wanted more nights like last night. More empty glass bottles were toppled over and surrounding her on the carpeted floor and there was a lit cigarette by her, resting in an ashtray.

She never used to smoke, in fact, she frowned upon anyone who did.

I quietly tip-toed towards her and put out the cigarette that was suspiciously creeping over the side of the ashtray, about to fall onto the carpet.

Then I picked up the four glass beer bottles up at once - I tried carefully not to let them clink because of the possibility of the sound waking her up, perhaps I was trying too hard as my shoulder collided with the door frame on my way to the kitchen, making the glass clash together loudly.

Shit!

"Mmma-tilda!" I hear mom's groggy voice from behind me.

I frown at the sound of her tired, barely understandable voice, and turn myself around slowly to face her. Her eyes were hardly open, they were squinted and she was manoeuvring her body lazily on the couch into a more comfortable position, "Yes?"

"D-don't have that tone with me - I know what you're thinking in that tiny head of yours," She groans, sitting herself up slightly and rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She blinks while I roll my eyes in response, "Don't you dare - I am your mother!"

"Hardly," I mutter under my breath, looking down at the carpet.

She squints her eyes, watching my lips through her long dark hair that was messily draped over her features... she hadn't heard me, probably due to suffering from yet another hangover, "What are you wearing?"

I glance over the leather jacket that Eddie had given me, it was zipped up because I was wearing my yellow t-shirt with the Licorice Pizza Plaza logo underneath, along with my name tag attached to it - she couldn't see it, she couldn't know... she couldn't taint yet another place where I felt free, where I could separate myself from this house.
