Donnie's avoiding me again.
You frowned at the thoughts that crept around inside your brain. You just watched as donnie came into the room, looked up at you, then walked away quickly.
What was his deal lately? You didn't understand you thought you were friends. Sure you didn't mind hanging out with the other guys or April. But donnie was your best friend.
It sort of hurt that he was avoiding you these last few days. He barely said a word. You knew everyone noticed. But no one mentioned it. But you felt their sorry stares. (You hated the pity.)
You looked down at your shoes, crossing your arms avoiding everyone's sympathetic stares. Maybe they think the two of you got into a heated argument. It was the opposite though.
The last time you got to hang out with Donnie everything was completely normal. You were happy to help him reorganize his things. Happy to just spend time with him while he babbled on about his latest project.
Maybe you don't know a lot about what he's talking about, but you like hearing him talk and watch how into it he gets.
That day still was fresh in your mind.
He was talking, going on and your mind sort of tuned out what he was saying. But your body was leaning closer to him. Intent on listening even if what he was saying was going through one ear and out the other.
"And then, when you alphabetize your gears you'll find it's much easier to find the part you need than to sort through a jumbled mess. For example-"
His voice would fade, occasionally, in and out. Some of the things he was saying reaching you while others whisked past you. You wanted to be closer. To hear him better. (So you defended in your mind.)
Before you knew it you had gravitated too close. Desperate to find some sort of warmth to him, in his cold lab. Donnie's words had fallen off his tongue. What ever he had been saying lost to the wind.
It was quite. You didn't quite seem to realize he stopped taking yet. Gazing at him so intensely, you've never seen him this close before. There's always been a good distance between the two of you. (A good platonic distance.)
The groves on his face were illuminated by the light, highlighting the way the ran across it, defining his jaw. You almost touched it as if hypnotized by him.
He was quick to back away in a gasp. (He didn't realize he had been holding his breath.)
You had come to in that moment. Realizing you had gotten too close, closer than friends should be. Your face soon became a cherry red.
"I'm so sorry donnie I- I don't know what just came over me!" It was an excuse. You both knew it. Neither of you had wanted to admit that.
Donnie was panting. Desperate to keep space. His face equally as red. Your hearts beating just as fast together.
"I-I think that's enough reorganizing for today- y-you should....you should go home!" Donnie spoke so fast you barely understood what he was saying. But soon found yourself pushed out of the lab.
You were frozen outside in the hallway. Your heart and mind racing.
After that day he's been distant. Barely uttering a word to you. The air in the room awkward whenever he emerged only to quickly recede back to wherever he had come from.
It was starting to bug you.
You were beating yourself up for even getting that close to him. But he didn't seem like he hated it. He almost let you touch his face. That's the farthest he's ever let you go. (Not that you've ever tried but you knew he was not a hugger so you respected his boundaries.)
