Harry meets Liam in the summertime. its a complete accident, really. but harry wouldn't go back and change it. not for anything.

his mom owns the bakery and she doesn't expect it to be all too popular- usually bakeries crash and burn, at least they do where she's from. but her bakery is quite popular, and while that's a good thing, she isn't prepared and ends up having to search for employees at the last minute.

harry and his sister gemma are both quickly employed, as well as harry's friends eleanor and louis. (he doesn't quite know why louis is employed, though, seeing as he's a five-year-old in a fifteen-year-old's body.) and it's not too hard, what they're doing. louis, being the people person that he is, is instantly deemed the cashier. gemma, eleanor, and harry are in charge of the actual baking.

harry likes it. he likes it a lot. gemma can be snarky and moody and eleanor can moan on and on about how in love with louis she is, which can get hard when you're stuck in a kitchen with the people for multiple hours a day. but harry really does like it. it's summer and he doesn't really have any friends besides louis and eleanor. and louis is busy with his acting and eleanor is busy with her other friends.

(basically he has no choice.)

when harry meets liam it's not really the best time. he had just fallen in the kitchen, trying to carry in a sack of flour all by himself. gemma was sick, and so it was just him and eleanor, and when eleanor finds harry sprawled in a dazed mess on the floor, coated in flour, she promptly bursts into tears.

"hey, i'm fine," harry says, and he's trying to get up by himself, but the flour is surprisingly slippery on tiled flooring. "i just- could you just-"

he holds out his hand and she clumsily pulls him up, mumbling something about going to the bathroom, and harry is left confused and with a scrape on his elbow that is bleeding.

but when he walks out to the counter, louis isn't there and there's a line that is actually trailing out the door, which harry didn't think was possible until he sees it with his own eyes. all harry wants to do is escape to the bathroom to at least attempt cleaning himself up, but it becomes impossible when he hears "hey! aren't you going to take our order?"

so of course he does. he doesn't react when zayn malik, the kid that always sort of bullied him, laughingly comments on his appearance. that's not his job.

he meets liam (finally, they'll both think later) when he brings out the cupcakes and cookies and whatever else the boys ordered. he sets their plate on the table and right as he's walking away he hears "hey."

it's soft and maybe shy and harry turns, expecting some sort of snarky comment. the boy glances up at him through his eyelashes, fingers curled around the back of his chair as he's twisted slightly to face harry. "i'm sorry about him. he can be quite straightforward sometimes."

harry shrugs, fidgeting with the hem of his apron. "i've always sort of liked straightforward people, to be honest."

the boy smiles, actually looking at harry, and nods. "yeah, i have as well. i'm liam, by the way. liam payne. do you go to school with zayn and niall?" when harry nods, liam smiles again and continues. "i'll be going to school with you next year, then."

harry is able to escape then, saying something about the line getting too long, and when he gets back louis is back at the register, eyebrows raised. "did you fall in flour or something?"

"yes," harry answers seriously, heading to the loo to finally get cleaned up.

the new school year inches closer and so does liam.
