Detective Engin Sezgin had offered to wait outside with the Doctor, Ceren Basar, until Dr. Ferit Simsek and the assistant ME Dr. Pyril Baytekin arrived. Maybe, just maybe Pyril would have something to be jealous of for once. Engin was tired of seeing her flirt with every handsome police officer at every crime scene. For once Engin had someone at a crime scene that he could flirt with, or so he thought.
Ceren looked at Detective Sezgin, "So why are you waiting with me and not interviewing the eyewitness with your partner? Isn't that how these things are supposed to be done?"
Engin choked on the mint that he had been chewing. "Excuse me?"
"You heard me, is there a reason that you're over here waiting with me and not in there interviewing her?"
Engin had the good grace to be embarrassed but he sensed something in the straightforward Ceren that inspired him to reveal a confidence. "Well, if you want to know the truth, I'm hoping to make Dr. Baytekin a little bit jealous."
This peaked Ceren's interest, "Oh really? And why is this and why do you think that being seen with me will do this?"
Ceren knew exactly why being seen with her would make another woman jealous but sometimes a girl had to hear a compliment before giving a man aide. It was also kind of fun to watch them squirm a bit.
"Dr. Baytekin, Pyril, ugh. I have been asking her out for five years now and she will never say yes. Yet every crime scene we're at together she flirts with all the handsome policemen. I've had enough, it's my turn to flirt. I don't know why she won't say yes, I've asked and she won't answer. This is the last time I'm going to try to get her attention, if I'm not good enough for her then I'm moving on."
"Really? You've been trying to get her attention for over five years and now one last shot and you'll give it up if you aren't successful? Really Detective, you men are so easy." Ceren gave a flip of her hair and turned her back on him.
Huh? What did she mean? Engin had no clue, he really had no clue. Then he had an idea, "Maybe you could help me?"
Ceren looked at him like she would assess a patient, "Maybe I could Detective, maybe I could."
The Medical Examiner's van pulled up to the crime scene and both of the doctors hopped out. They were well liked by everyone in the department. Dr. Simsek had replaced a crusty and crabby old doctor and his genuine smiles were welcomed by all. If Dr. Simsek had one flaw it was that he was painfully shy around women with the exception of Dr. Baytekin, grandmothers, mothers, and dead ones. Women of marrying age had Ferit Simsek swallowing his tongue and turning a shade of red bordering on maroon.
The officers on site had been placing bets to see how soon it would be before Dr. Simsek retreated to his van. No one gave him longer than two minutes in Dr. Basar's presence. Ferit didn't notice the almost jovial attitude at the crime scene he was so focused on the body, it wasn't until he was leaning over to do a preliminary exam that he heard that whiskey tinged voice.
"It appears that the knife entered just below the sternum piecing both lung and heart. When he was brought onboard less than five minutes after the stabbing he was already dead. I checked both carotid and femoral pulses as well as heartbeat and pupil reaction and found none." Ceren was reciting her findings as though she was on rotation citing to the attending physician.
She was waiting for the ME to respond to her, he still hadn't commented so she nudged him with her toe. "Did you hear me?"
All Ferit could do was nod. Pyril wasn't shy like Ferit and she was also a big fan of fashion, she knew who Ceren Basar was but hadn't seen her modeling in years, now she knew why.
