It was dark, the car ride was silent as we drove down a long road. I sat in the back seat, staring out the window. A comfort smile rested itself on my face as I looked down at my lap. It was relaxing to finally know that I had everything that I wanted in life. I had the man of my dreams, another family who loved me and cherished me as their own, and within nine months, I'd have the most wonderful gift given to me. Right as I pulled out my phone to see if Domenico called, the sound of gun shots fired outside. My eyes instantly averted ahead to the front of the car. The sound of men yelling, gun shots, and fighting caused my face to go white.
" Stay in the car, Evangeline," my driver ordered. My stomach clenched immediately, " what's going on?" As the driver got out, the ear piercing sounds of gun shots got closer. Shoving my phone back into my pocket, I instantly crouched down behind the seat before me as my heart thinker in my chest. " THERE'S MORE COMING!" A voice yelled. I squeezed my eyes closed as my hands began to shake. I could feel bullets colliding themselves against the car, increasing the rapid beating if my heart. " THERE!" A voice yelled. More gunshots, more yelling, more fighting, and more grunting.
Hot tears streamed down my face as I squeezed my eyes closed and clenched my jaw. I felt sick, worse than I had ever felt in my entire life. Right as I was about to open my eyes, a body was thrown hard against the car. My hand shot up to my mouth as a scream threatened to exit my trembling lips. A knot clogged my throat as I stared at the seat in front of me, tears wetted my cheeks. Forcing my malfunctioned and hyperventilating body to take in several soft, deep breaths of air, I rested my head back against the chair behind me.
Everything was silent, the darkness crept around the car, hugging me as if it were some sort of comfort blanket. I breathed out softly, imagining Domenico's arms around me and hearing his faint voice murmuring assuring words. Footsteps began approaching the car, bringing back the utter horror and darkness into my body. Closing my eyes, I held my breathe as I pressed my hand firmly against my mouth. " Check all the cars, she's here somewhere," a low, raspy voice ordered. I shook my head, praying to God that whoever attacked us wouldn't find me. " These cars are empty!" A voice called out. I could feel him, whoever stood outside the car, I could feel his presence beside the car.
More footsteps approached the car as I squeezed my eyes closed. " Check it," the raspy voice ordered. The thickness of his accent made my skin crawl, goosebumps bloomed up and down my arms. Both the passenger and drivers side door opened, cold air crawled into the car as it slowly slithered back to me, clinging its arms around my neck. " Open the back," the man ordered. Pulling my knees up against my chest, I got as small as I could before wrapping my arms around my shins.
The slow, hushing sound of the trunk opening pushed endless amounts of hot tears out of my eyes. " Please, please, please, please," I thought and begged as I shook my head. " Wait," the raspy voice said. I opened my eyes as I looked out the trunk of the car. The stars illuminated themselves as they sat peacefully up the sky. Suddenly, footsteps slowly began disappearing away from the car. I peeked up and over the back seats, nothing but darkness and eerie tree branches looked back at me. Exhaling softly, I gripped the edges of the back seats as I pulled myself up. My eyes quickly looked around, the road was empty. Lifting my legs up and over the seat heads, I stepped down into the bed of the trunk and waited. Whistling sounds of the wind hitting the tree leaves filled the air. Birds cawed in the distance as I waited and listened for any unfamiliar sounds.
