"aubrey, can you come here?" my dad asked as i was packing my clothes away. 

"yeah, give me a minute." i said as i finished folding the shirt in my hands. 

i placed the shirt on my bed as i made my way to my dad, "yes dad?" 

"aubrey, when are you leaving for college? the school year starts next month and you need to figure out when you're leaving." 

i sighed as i sat down in the chair and said, "probably in 2 weeks or so."

"have you told billie when you're leaving?" he asked as he pulled a drink out of the fridge. 

i shook my head as i said, "i don't know how to tell her. dad i love her, i don't want to leave her." 

"i understand aubrey, trust me i do. but the longer you keep this from her, the more it's gonna hurt." he said as i opened the water bottle. 

"how do you think i should tell her? should i soften things up?" 

he shook his head as he swallowed the water in his mouth and said, "no, soften things up afterwards." 

"what do you mean?"

"don't baby it. sit her down and talk to her. tell her school starts next month and you plan on leaving in 2 or 3 weeks."

i nodded slowly then said, "should i do that at her house or mine?" 

my dad shrugged his shoulders before he said, "doesn't matter where, just tell her. if you keep this from her, before you know it the day you'll be leaving will be tomorrow." he said as he walked over to me. 

"aubrey, don't worry. i see you and billie together and i can tell you she will be ok. she loves you, and that's all that matters."

"have you ever had to do something like this with mom?" i asked before he left the room. 

he stopped walking and turned around, "yes. i had to leave for business right before you where born. i almost didn't make it home in time for you." he said as he laughed a little. 

"what did mom do?" i asked as i crossed my right leg over my left leg. 

he sighed as he said, "she wasn't happy with me, but her love for me is what made her welcome me home with open arms. she loved me regardless."

"do you think billie will still love me 2,000 miles away?" 

"from the outside, yes. if she doesn't, she's not worth it." my dad said as he turned around and headed to his room. 

i got up from my chair and headed back to my room, taking in everything my dad told me. 

as i got to my room i pulled my phone out and clicked on billie's contact.
