He could feel it – their eyes – watching them closely.
Then, the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end and his skin prickled with goosebumps.
He could sense it. Like a fox sniffing out a rabbit in the pitch darkness of night, he could sense the danger nearby.
His thoughts went into overdrive and his eyes whipped across the landscape behind his mask.
"Don't panic, but when I say it, duck," he instructed sternly, cutting off Bokuto and Kuroo's conversation.
"What? Why??" Bokuto asked in confusion, a similar expression on Kuroo's face as well.
Atsumu didn't turn to look at either of them, though he visibly bristled as he scanned the roof of each building thoroughly, "Jus' do it," he replied in response to Bokuto's question.
They sat quietly on the roof for another thirty seconds before Atsumu spotted something on the roof of a building that was diagonally in front of them across the cross-intersection.
It was dark, but Atsumu saw it clearly, the glint of the barrel of a sniper-rifle in the moonlight, and, behind it, a silhouette of a person ready to pull the trigger.
"Get down!" Atsumu shouted right as he saw a twitch of movement.
Kuroo and Bokuto ducked while Atsumu launched himself upwards onto his feet, kicking off into a backflip to dodge the bullet that collided with the concrete roof.
The trajectory had been perfect. If Atsumu had still been sitting where he was, he'd have a hole through his head by now.
Atsumu snarled and crouched down to slip the kunai dagger out of his shoe. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed the dagger up before launching off the ground in a high jump. He twisted in the air and his sneaker connected perfectly with the hilt of his dagger as he sent it slicing through the air towards the shooter.
Atsumu didn't look to see where the dagger had landed. He was much too far away for it to hit its proper mark anyway.
"Get to the car an' back to base," he commanded.
"What about you?" Kuroo asked frantically.
"I'll be right behind ya," Atsumu answered, but he was already running to the edge of the roof, "Don't wait for me!"
Bokuto and Kuroo glanced at each other in worry but did as told nonetheless and quickly scrambled up to run in the direction of the car.
Meanwhile, Atsumu had leapt off the edge of the building to the next one over, which was a storey lower so he had to do a tumble to land without breaking anything.
He was a bit worried about Kuroo and Bokuto's safety on the trip back to the car, but decided that it was futile to panic about. The bullet had been aimed at him anyways.
He ran down an outdoor stairwell and across the road to the block adjacent to the building the sniper was situated on.
He should have lost the sniper's gaze by then, but something told him that he was still being watched, and his suspicions were confirmed when another bullet came careening past his head as he climbed up the side of another building using the windowsills.
He wondered how the person was able to pinpoint him so quickly. Then, realization hit him like a freight train carrying four tons of bricks.
It had to be. That shot was perfectly aimed, and only someone of Atsumu's skill-level could have dodged it.
Besides, there was only one known person who could find Atsumu after he 'vanished'. A person who Atsumu had specially taught how to find him two years back when he'd first joined Kiyoomi's team.
That person was none other than Kiyoomi himself.
He pulled himself up onto the roof of the building ran across it in Kiyoomi's direction. He ducked as another bullet came flying past his head.
His eyes blurred with tears as he slipped another dagger from his ankle. He planted his foot and quickly dived back, twisting through the air to dodge another bullet.
The moment his feet hit the concrete roof, he twisted around and used his momentum to throw his kunai dagger, like a bullet, shooting through the air.
The dagger zipped through the cool night air and sliced through the barrel of Kiyoomi's sniper rifle. Atsumu clenched his fist, he'd unconsciously aimed slightly lower than he'd meant to. Either way, though, it did the trick.
Kiyoomi grabbed his damaged gun and ran towards the stairwell of the rooftop he was situated on. Atsumu would have chased after him, but he knew he had to get back to Bokuto and Kuroo.
Atsumu scowled. Kiyoomi really tried to kill him after everything they'd been through together? Atsumu's lower lip trembled and he could feel his heart going cold again as his tears began to drip down into the dark confines of his mask.
Oh. That's right. The mask.
Kiyoomi knew who he was. He'd trusted Kiyoomi with his identity, and now Kiyoomi had betrayed him, turned his back on both Atsumu and the team.
Atsumu inhaled sharply. Kiyoomi had signed his own death warrant by betraying him.
He knew Atsumu's identity. That was all it took, and the assassin knew what that meant. He was going to hunt down his master and boyfriend, and drive a dagger through his skull.
It was only natural that Atsumu made sure that his identity did not get exposed, even if it meant killing the one he loved the most.
That's what Atsumu was – a killer. A boy thought to be dead that was made into a weapon.
That's who he was, after all. Vulpes, a ghost who walked among the living. Vulpes, an assassin who was often mistaken as a demon who crawled up from the underworld by those who saw the aftermath of his assassinations. He was more monster than man at this point, utterly unkillable. He was a weapon who previously went rogue and killed his master, but what happens when the master himself goes rogue? What then?
With that grim train of thought, Atsumu made his way back towards the car, taking the route he'd just come from.
