Kayleigh took a few deep breaths to steady her nerves before she pressed the buzzer on the side of the tall iron gates.
"Yes?" came a woman's voice through the speaker, sounding a little flustered and annoyed.
"Oh, hi" Kayleigh stammered a little taken aback by the harsh tone she was greeted with. "Um. I'm here for the interview. Kayleigh Goldsworthy?" she explained.
"Oh right. Yeah. Do you have any ID?" she was asked.
"Um yeah. I have my driver's license and my social security" Kayleigh replied.
"Hold your license up to the screen!" came the curt demand.
Once satisfied with the ID, the gates began to automatically open. No thanks or anything from the householder. Just silence and then entry.
Kayleigh walked up the driveway and took in her surroundings. It was a beautiful home that she saw before her, slightly up and to the right of the long, curved path that she headed up. The gardens were simple, yet well maintained. There were neat borders bursting with colour, large looming trees with beautiful foliage and a vast array of sculptures and figurines dotted around the place. It was peaceful and it put Kayleigh's mind at ease a little as she headed towards the house. She rang the bell and waited patiently on the doorstep, biting the inside of her mouth and trying to remember everything Frank had told her about Lindsey. Compliment her! That was the main thing.
The heavy door swung open, and Kayleigh recognised Lindsey instantly, with her familiar dark hair and ruby red lips. She wore a flowing loose kimono type robe and looked a little annoyed as though she had been interrupted and wasn't expecting anybody. Kayleigh mentally questioned herself as to whether she had the right time, but she was sure she had.
She held out her hand nervously and introduced herself once again.
"Pleased to meet you Mrs Way. I'm Kayleigh."
Lindsey shook her hand in return and seemed to soften a little as she opened the door wider to allow her inside.
The interior of the house was as beautiful as the exterior, with artwork adorning every wall and expensive furnishings throughout. She didn't have to lie when she instantly complimented Lindsey's home. It was like something out of a movie. As she looked around in awe, she bumped into one of the side tables, causing a loud bang. She blushed furiously at her clumsiness and panicked in case anything had been knocked over. It hadn't but Lindsey still looked annoyed at her.
"Can you please be careful!" she scolded. "There's a lot of expensive pieces in my home, and I'd like them to remain that way."
"Sorry" Kayleigh apologised, wanting to just turn and leave.
"Through here!" Lindsey ordered, heading through the lounge and out into an open patio out the back. "I'll interview you and if I think you may be suitable then I'll introduce to Mr Way" she explained.
Lindsey quickly went through the paperwork Kayleigh had brought with her. Kayleigh prayed to God that Lindsey wouldn't ask too many questions about her 'past experience'. Fortunately, she didn't, and after a short while, Kayleigh began to compose herself and started to talk a little more freely. She told Lindsey once again how beautiful her home and garden were, admired her artwork (some of which she knew would have been her own), gushed over how she must be a wonderful wife to devote her life to her husband's needs and generally kissed her ass for the full half hour.
Frank was absolutely right. It hadn't taken too much to get Lindsey on side – she simply had to tell her how wonderful she was and that was it. She was actually smiling at Kayleigh as the interview came to a close.
