"I am in love with you," Augustus Waters says from the screen. I cuddle into Avory. This is my favorite part. I love it when he pronounces his love to her. For a long time, it was what I wished Avory would do for me. And then he did. Not like that but he did. And it was romantic and I loved it.
"Augustus," Hazel Grace says. I look into Avory's eyes.
"Avory," I say, mimicking Hazel's tone.
"Yes," he says, completely unaware. He looks at me. But I can't see a question in his eyes. They are sparkling as if he is about to do something.
"What..." I start. And then, just before Gus begins to speak, he grabs the remote from Eeli, who is distracted, looking into Lily's eyes, and mutes it. I start to get angry and then he stops me.
He looks into my eyes and begins to speak.
"I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you," and then he unmutes it and returns to watching. And all I can do is stare at him.
