The hospital is quiet except for the occasional squeaks of my shoes against the floor, racing to my best friend's room.I skid to a stop just before her room and realize. It's too quiet for such an event. Devin was in a coma for a month and woke up with no memory. If she remembers why aren't more people here?
Creeping to the room still pondering why, I see Devin's door open. Inside Shawn and Chase sit quietly talking while Devin is asleep, Chase perched beside his love while Shawn stood near the door.
What is going on here?
"Shawn. Dude what's up, you said she is remembering."
"Oh yeah about that," He rubs the back of his neck with his hand, "I might have sorta kinda yenno um... lied."
Wait back the truck up. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN LIED?! YOU CANT JUST LIE ABOT SOMETHING LIKE THAT! SHES MY BEST FRIEND!" I'm furious now. I stride over to Shawn and connect my fist with his face.
Now that my knuckle is purple and blue and Shawn is holding his jaw, silence lurks in every corner.
"Both you, take it outside!" Chase snaps, not taking his eyes from Devin's silent face. I smile softly at Chase as he holds Devin's small, slowly paling hand in his large tan one. "Take care of her," I choke out before turning and walking out into the hallway.
When I was a good few feet away from the door, but still in front of the window so we could see Devin and Chase, I turned on Shawn. "Why would you lie?" I spat, fury making my words venomous. To my surprise, Shawn barely flinched.
"Why would I lie?! Why would I lie!?" His eyes were alight with anger, his jaw and fists clenched. "I lied because you were being a pathetic excuse for a best friend!" He snapped, pointing an accusing finger at me.
This shocked me into silence. My eyes widened at his statement. Before I could speak, Shawn stuck up his hand. "No. Don't speak. For once listen. Do you see that boy in there?" He pointed through the window to Chase, who had only moved to kiss Devin on the forehead occasionally. I dully nodded.
"He has been here since the beginning," he started, his voice becoming soft. "Do you know why? It's because he loves her. He loves that girl, our best friend. Have you ever seen anything like it?" He asked, turning my head to me as I watched the couple. I shook my head. Shawn turned his head back, also watching them.
"Neither have I. But Bray, we love her too. I know I haven't been here as much as I wished I could have, but God, if I would have if I could have. Bray, you could have been here." He turned back to me now. "You could have been here, right there with Chase. But you chose to leave, to not come back until we asked you. I understand this is painful, but she is our best friend. Don't you think she would have done the same for us?" He asked, his words lingering in the air.
We stayed that way, both lost in our own thoughts.
I watched Chase get up, and with one last look at Devin, walk out of the room. I turned to him as he came out and walked up to us. "I need to go to the bathroom real quick," he glanced through the window. "Watch her," he ordered sternly before darting away. I smiled at his loyalty.
Tears began to drip down my face. "Shawn?" I sniffed.
He turned to me, his eyebrow raised. Her faces quickly turned surprised as I rushed at him, wrapping my arms around his broad frame. "Thank you," I whispered, feeling him rub circles in my back.
"Your welcome Bray. I'm always here," he whispered, and I could her his happiness that I listened. I pulled back so I could look up at him.
"Thanks," I grinned.
He smiled and began to walk back into the room. "Come on," he said, motioning towards the room. "Now let's go be there for our BFF," he squealed, racing inside. I laughed at him. "Yep, still Shawn as ever," I laughed at my gay best friend. I'll have to remember to ask him if he's had any luck finding a guy.
I walked inside, following him. "So how is she..." The words died on my lips as I walked in.
My eyes went straight to Devin, who's eyes were flickering open. They searched the room, confusion clouding them. As they landed on Shawn and I, she smiles. "Bray? Shawn? What's going on?"
I freeze, and everything grows quiet. My mouth open and closes, but I can't seem to get any words out. Luckily, Shawn can.
He rushes forward, wrapping his arms around her. "You remember?" He says franticly, pulling away and looking her over, checking if she was ok. She laughed.
"Yeah, I guess. Was I out or something?" She seemed a little confused, her hand going to her wrist and rubbing it anxiously.
"Well, Devin, you were..." He trailed off, rubbing his neck and looking at me. I snapped out of my frozen state.
Rushing over to Devin, I made sure to be careful that I didn't grab her too hard, for fear she may break. I winced as I wrapped my arms around her, feeling every rib and how sickly skinny she was.
"Devin, you were in a coma," I whispered, pulling away.
Her pale and frail body lay limp in confusion. "I, I was?" Chase nodded and so did Shawn.
Just then a nurse walked in and told us all to leave. I crept away, leaving my best friend again.
Down in the lobby, Jc awaits with open arms and a dry shoulder prepared to be soaked.
I fell into his body letting myself to let go of everything. I didn't care that we were in public or that people are staring.
All I care about is us. So we just stand there holding each other.
