one month later
Brayden's POV
I can not believe that there's only a month and a half left in my senior year. Graduation day creeps closer and closer. It doesn't seem real.

It seems like yesterday that I was walking in as a freshmen. Who knew these would've been the fastest four years of my life?

Today is Friday, and I have a Student Council meeting today. We're discussing prom. I've never wanted to go to prom and I really wasn't planning on it but then Devin and my mom insisted I just go look at dresses and as they said I fell in love with a dress.

It was an all black two piece dress, black as my soul as I said to mom which she didn't like. I bought some shoes and mom booked me a hair appointment. She takes this stuff way too seriously. So does Shawn. Good Lord that boy loves to shop. Prom is in two week and I don't have a date because well, I can't go with my teacher, lol. So I've decided to go with Shawn. Why not go with you're newly single GBF? Oh yeah his boyfriend, well ex cheated on him with a girl. It sucks I know.

When I arrive at school I go to stop my car in my usual spot, but something is in the way. It looks like a box.

I park the car in the spot next to it and hop out. To:Brayden❤️,
It read. I untied the bow and took out the smaller box inside. My eyes glowed as I saw it was a necklace box. I open it hoping to see a beautiful necklace but to my surprise it's um a beautiful candy necklace? On three little candy pendants hanging off of it it said After prom?

I of course knew who it was. I laughed and put the necklace on (well after eating the message). I grabbed my bag and walked into school.

"Um, what is this? Honey, honey. Candy necklaces haven't been the style since well, first grade." Shawn said shaking his head, standing at my locker. I tried to hold back a giggle but failed.

I made sure to be the first one in English today. After I walked in I swiftly shut the door to his class. Jc turned from the chalkboard and looked at me. "You didn't need to ask if you already knew the answer." I said as I walked closer. Lately the sexual tension between us has been insane. We never get to hang out anymore so it's hard to control myself.

He grabbed my hips and smashed his lips against mine. He turned me around and pinned me against the wall, groping my boob. "Jc..." I try to say. "We can't," His body squeezes me closer. "Not here."

Jc finally pulled away. "I'm not kidding. After prom you're coming to my place. I'm not letting you leave."

He walks over and opens the door violently. He was mad. He usually gets mad when we can't do things.

I sat in my seat and pulled out my notebook.

••

At lunch people are standing in a big long to give blood. I decide why not, its free cookies. After about a 10 minute wait I finally sit in the chair. The tall, too tall, well built blonde lady with too much blue eye shadow on looks at me and starts rubbing alcohol on my arm. She asks for my name. "Brayden Smith." Without any warning she shoves a needle in my vein.

Two minutes later I'm happily munching on a cookie walking to science.

Science is cool. It's biology. We're learning stuff about genes and diseases being passed through the genes. It all bores me.

••

"Okay student council, what is our theme? We have vintage grunge theme. We have a reggae Jamaica theme. There's an hip hop gangster vibish theme. And last a country barn raising theme."

I wrote on my slip of paper. Vintage Grunge. Of course I picked that. They better not let me down or I'm leaving halfway through prom.

Everyone handed in their slips of paper into the box. I was about to go out mine in when an announcement came on the intercom.

"Brayden Smith if you could please come to the office."

Not sure that this is. My heart began to race. Shit Jc. My heart beat so fast. The halls were silent. I could almost hear my heart beat. It was tormenting me. In the office stood the head nurse of taking blood, the principal, and my dad? What was he doing here?

"Brayden hello," The nurse started. "I'm Nurse Carmen. Please have a seat."

She shook my hand as I sat down. What was going on here, it wasn't about Jc. I frantically look to dad. He gave a small sympathetic look. His eyes were watery. Had he been crying?? What for? My mind raced and ask so many questions.

"Why am I here?" I asked in a tone that was more snobby than I meant it. The nurse bit her lip and looked from my dad to me and back. He nodded. What am I missing here?

"Okay honey I'm sure your mind must be raging with questions. What I'm going to tell you now is that we need you to come to the hospital for some more testing. Something was off about your blood, you know the blood you have today."

It was dead silent in the room. I was staring at my shoes, refusing to look up. I had a hunch as to what this was. But I'd never say until for sure.

Dad drove me to the hospital. The awkward ride didn't help my anxiousness.

••

Seven tests so far. A different nurse came in every time. Nobody told me anything. When the last nurse left I pulled out my phone.
To: Shawn, Devin, Jc
Guys I don't know what's going on but I'm at the hospital and I've had so many tests taken. I'm freaking out right now.
From: Jc
Hospital? Why? What tests? What's going on? What happened to you? Are you okay?
I slightly chuckled. It was cute when he was worried.
To: Jc
Yes I'm fine. Nothing happened just during student council I was called to the office and this nurse told me something was odd about my blood I gave today. So they took me here and ran further tests to investigate more.

The door opened. I was expecting it to be another nurse but a doctor came in. She was short and had red curly hair.

"Hello, Ms. Smith. I'm Dr. Melody Hill. How are you today? I'm sorry for this sudden attack of tests. But we have your results back. Is your father or any other family here?" I shook my head. Dad left he had to get back to work. Mom was in Texas.

"Okay well, honey. I have some big news. You're parents will want to hear." She strode over to the phone and dialed a three digit number. "Hi, yes Carmen. It's Melody. Can you please call Mr. Smith and tell him that he needs to be here for his daughters results? Ah thank you so much."

She looked at me and smiled. I managed to break a small smile out.

Ten minutes later dad came rushing in the room panting. He sat down on the chant next to the bed and we waited for him to catch his breath.

"Hi Mr. Smith. Dr. Melody Hill. I'm the pediatric hematologist-oncologist. I'm sure by my title you know why I'm here. There's no easy way to say this. Brayden, you have leukemia."
