Brayden's POV
Damn. Life is hard. It has been a month, and Devin isn't awake. Chase doesn't leave her side. He literally hasn't. He hasn't showered, barely eaten. I feel bad, so I always try to bring him some food and drinks.I'm trying to keep going but, I mean, you're best friend could die any day. I try not to think like that but, how can I not?
I walked over to my closet and grabbed some leggings and a hoodie. I twisted my hair into a side braid and put on a head band. I added a little make up, and my uggs.
I'm just going to the hospital. I don't really care what I look like going there.
My phone starts vibrating. Jc. I slide over to accept it."Hello?
"Hey Bray, what's goin' on?"
"About to head to the hospital."
"Oh. Do you want to hang out later?"
I look at the clock. I'm late, I had promised Chase I would be there by 10:30. It's 11:00.
"Maybe I don't know. I have a lot of homework. Maybe tomorrow."
"Sure." And he hung up.•••
"Chase, why are you laying on the floor?"
"The couch is hard. I can't sleep on it." He gets up and sits on Devin's hospital bed.
"Then why don't you go home and sleep in your bed?"His face grew stern, his eyes hard. "No. I'm. Not. Leaving. Her." I put my hands up in defense.
"Okay, sorry."
Chase's gaze wandered from my face to Devin's. "Baby, I need you. Please wake up." Chase begged, a few tears splashed into his hand, which was interlocked with Devin's hand. "Please, stay. Please promise me. Stay," he continued to whisper the word, bringing his face to her hands.
It seemed as these two were the only people in the world. It was such a beautiful sight, complete and utter love.
The nurse walks over to check Devin. "Young lady I would listen to your boy. He's been here everyday. Don't leave him, he's a keeper." The nurse tells sleeping Devin. She smiles and pats her hand while checking that everything was alright with her blood pressure and heart rate.
I stood to the side, looking at my best friend. An IV came out of her arm, pumping a clear liquid into her. A stark white bandage wrapped around her head. Her face and hands were pale. She was hard to look at, so fragile.
I turned my head away, closing my eyes to block my tears. After I regained my composure, I turned back. The nurse had left. Chase was still looking at her motionless face. He drew circles with his thumb on top of her hand.
"Chase, come get something to eat, then we can come right back, ok?" I asked, tilting my head slightly, looking at his sunken features. He simply shook his head, not taking his gaze away from my friend.
"Chase, I'm not kidding. What will Devin say if-" Chase cut me off.
"When!" Chase says ferociously, and I held up my hands once again.
"You're right. WHEN she wakes up, what do think she would think to see you starving yourself so you could stay with her? First, she would be pissed with you. Then, she would be feel guilty for being the cause. Can we really do that?" Just as I predicted, Chase stiffened, then slowly stood.
He turned to me and said, "Ok, let's go. The sooner we leave, the sooner we can come back." He started towards the door. I started to follow.
Suddenly, Afire Love by Ed Sheeran blasted through the room. I jumped, startled. I looked at Chase, who was struggling to pull his phone out of his pocket.
He turned the volume down and walked to Devin, setting the phone on the bedside table, next to some wilting flowers. I raised a brow as he turned around.
"I pick one of her favorite songs to play each hour. It might wake up her brain," he explained. I only nodded.
He turned and walked of the room, with me on his tail. The elevator took us down to the parking garage and we made our way to my Jeep.
Chase climbed into the passenger's seat, and I in the driver's seat. The car started after two sputters.
Chase clicked the radio, playing my Bluetooth playlist. The first song that comes on is American Idiot by Green Day, which I know is Chase's favorite song. I look over at his face. He has a large smile and is air playing the drums on the dashboard.
We sing/scream together as I drive to Chick-Fil-A. " WELCOME TO A NEW KIND OF TENSION ALL ACROSS THE ALIENATION WHERE EVERYTHING ISNT MEANT TO BE OKAAAYY!"
As we drove through the drive thru I turned down the radio.
"Hi welcome to Chick-Fil-A. What can I get you?"
"Can I get two large Dr. Peppers, the 3 piece chicken strip, a crispy barbecue chicken wrap, and two medium fries."
"Okay you're total will be $23.67."
I drove to the window and gave the lady my money for our food. Once we got all situated, I drove back to the hospital.
Shawn stood outside Devin's closed room door pacing. He look nervous, and kinda happy too.
"Shawn, are you okay?" Chase questioned touching Shawn's arm, calming him.
"She's awake."
