Jake always worked early shifts. 6-12, every fucking day. Well, almost everyday. He got Fridays, Saturdays and went into work later on Sundays. Honestly, it wasn't the worst thing that could ever happen to him. There wasn't ever any people who actually sat down at one of the tables and ate a cinnamon roll and drink their coffee. Most of them were rushing to get to work or school. Sometimes, there'd be rude customers, just having a bad morning. Hey, it happens to everyone.
But there was this guy. He came in everyday with a big smile on his face. He ordered the same thing everyday, most of the time getting a cinnamon roll or maybe even a cookie. He would almost always stay and eat while scrolling on his phone or something. Sometimes the two boys would make small talk, but not often. But if he came in later than 7, he'd leave immediately because he was in a rush. It was easy to tell when those days would be. Obviously, coming in later than normal but his smile wouldn't be as bright and it was clear to see that he was panicking.
There was this time, he came in way earlier than usual, which, was just odd. He worked at the bakery just down the road, and he was dressed in a different style of clothes, not like it didn't look good on him. Jake, he loved it. He always looked good. He knew he wasn't running late, it was just 6:15. Though, he still looked nervous.
"Same hot chocolate as usual?"
Asked Jake, already knowing the answer."Uh, yeah."
The other replied, looking up at the menu."Can I get a cinnamon roll too?"
He asked."Yep, that'll be $6.81"
the worker claimed. The guy paid, and waited.
"You're here earlier than usual."
Jake stated."Uh, yeah, I got a new job."
He says."Oh, really? Where you working at now?"
He asked."The new library around the corner. It had a lot better pay and I actually get a few days off."
The boy let's put a breathy laugh."Oh yeah! I was planning on going there after work today. But, you never got any days off? I mean, I work all week just not on Fridays, or Saturdays. And I go into work later on Sundays."
Jake explains."Yeah, same! Except for the Sunday part."
He replies, grabbing his drink. He sees something written on it, but pretends not to notice."So, you have to go into work earlier now?"
The curly headed boy asked."No I go in later. It doesn't even open until 8, which is my shift. I'm just really nervous and it's quiet here so it's more comforting."
He says, sitting down in his usual spot."Yeah, I love morning shifts. Not many people come in this early because there's a Starbucks more down there and stuff. But waking up early is not my thing. I'm more of a night person."
Jake chuckles, fidgeting with his fingers. The customer looks at his cup, it has his name on it. It always did. "Devon. ###-###-#### Call me." Is what the cup said. Oh. That's the extra stuff he saw. Well, Jake wasn't really looking at him now. So, Devon adds his number into his phone, he'll text him after he leaves for work.
After, he orders another hot chocolate, Jake notices how he kept the cup he originally gave him. Then another and they just chatted until it was 7:50. Devon said his goodbye and left for his work. Then, he sent the text.
Jake feels his phone buzz in his pocket, there isn't any customers in here, so what's the harm in checking? He whips out his phone, seeing it's from a random number. When he opens the text it reads: "Hey, it's Devon"
He felt his heart skip a beat or two. He really texted him. He replies, and now they have plans for this Saturday.
