Salvatore Estate

June 18th, 1839

Lillian Salvatore knew that her time was soon. She groaned and leaned back in the big feather bed as her maid swabbed her forehead with a cool cloth.

"Rest now, Madam," Alice whispered. "Not too much longer."

"Is my husband back?" Lillian wondered.

Alice shook her head, "Not yet. We sent word to Richmond."
"That tis fine," Lillian said. "Giuseppe is not a patient man. He would most likely fret and shout that I have cost him money, if I labor too long."

Alice chuckled and held a glass of water to her lips.

"The babe will be here when he is ready. He is probably as stubborn as his father," Alice noted.

Lillian smiled to herself and thought you have no idea...

But to her maid, she asked, "And how do you know it tis a boy? My mother birthed five girls to my late father's chagrin."

"I carried my sons the same as you, low and to the side," Alice commented. "My sister, Angela, carried her girl higher. You shall find out shortly, my dear."
Lillian nodded, "Have you heard from your sweet sister?"

"Just a few letters. The new estate suits her well," Alice said, busying herself with the cloth. In truth, her sister had bore Master Salvatore's child and then he sent her to one of his other estates. She would never think of her niece as a bastard, only the father was one. A right cruel one at that.

"Good to hear," Lillian said, before another contraction shook her frame. "Ahhhh, they are coming faster."

The midwife came and a few hours later, Damon Salvatore came into the world.

Years later, when Stefan was born, Lillian always laughed to think how Giuseppe had never even suspended Damon was not his own flesh and blood. When a series of animal attacks struck the land and Giuseppe's paranoia took over, only Lillian knew the truth. Her husband's instincts were correct. Supernaturals lived among them in Mystic Falls, though Lily suspected that they were less barbaric than the Italian immigrant she had wed when she was a slip of girl. As the years rolled by, Giuseppe's indulgence in drink and womanizing had only grown with his vast wealth. And he seemed to hate the boy, Damon, as much as he loved Stefan.

"Mistress, Cook is asking about the supper menu for this week," Alice prompted.

Lily pushed back from her writing desk. She kept a secret diary that she hid in a compartment in the back of the ornate secretary desk. She was surrounded by rich, beautiful things, but yet she lived in fear.

"Thank you, Alice. I shall be downstairs shortly," Lily smiled. She continued to write until she heard her boys. She smiled.

"Mother, what are you doing?" Damon asked, coming in the well-appointed parlor with Stefan on his shoulders.

"Just writing the accounts, my loves. Tis almost time for lunch. Go wash up and we shall dine," Lily encouraged.

Damon cast a glance as the diary and smiled, "Yes, Mother. Just allow me to dump this sack of old potatoes in the root cellar and I shall meet you for luncheon."
