Night

"I can't believe we just got sent to bed like we're toddlers," Damon grumbled as he and Enzo climbed the grand staircase.

Enzo chuckled, "You should have seen your face! I thought you were going to deck your old man for a second."

"I considered stealing that bottle of vodka and biting him, but I didn't think that would turn out too well," Damon smirked. "You'd probably like me to take a chunk out of Wes' puny neck, huh?"
Enzo enjoyed the mental image for a second.

"Aye, I mean, how useful is this bloke? So he can look at shite under a fancy microscope. Big deal. What's the point? I say we arrange for a little accident for him...," Enzo said, lowering his voice.

Damon sneered, "Tempting, but don't. He's protected now. I think they like having a medical doctor in the house. Wes could also be important in the future. Those bastards are dangerous, as you well know. And then what do we do with that kid? He's a time bomb waiting to explode. If I have to hear him bitching about that room one more time, I might end him myself."
"Well, you didn't get into trouble for biting Kol so I'm sure you could get away with it," Enzo surmised as they got to Damon's door.

Finn cleared his throat.
"Whatever you two are plotting. Stop. No harm comes to Dr. Maxfield, is that clear?" Finn hissed, his arms crossed across his chest.

Enzo looked uncomfortable, but Damon just rolled his eyes.

"We were just jesting, Finn," Enzo defended.

"Jest in your room. The children are sleeping," Finn reminded them.

"Aye, good night," Enzo said, disappearing into his bedroom.

"Damon, I thought you'd be sleeping by now. I was just coming to check on you," Finn said, opening Damon's room and waiting until he entered and then following him in.

"Yeah, I heard Ric and Dorian downstairs. They had some information on the Augustines. I'm okay. You don't need to check on me," Damon said, checking his reflection in the mirror.

"You may look fine, but you were pretty shaken up before," Finn recalled. "Now, all these other matters can wait. Get ready for bed."

Damon bristled.

"I'm not a child! I can put myself to bed," Damon snapped.

Finn raised his eyebrows at the outburst until Damon faltered under his stern gaze.
"Sorry, I just hate everyone on me all the time," Damon explained, leaning against the dresser. "You know, I'm used to being the one who looks after Stefan. I have barely seen him tonight."

"I caught him doing Kol's school work earlier," Finn reported. "I will give the boy credit for not lying, though. And Kol does have the devil's silver tongue. He was always good at goading your father, especially, into doing his chores when we were human, so he could run off and play. Some things never change."

"No, they don't," Damon agreed. "But Stefan can be honest to a fault. Unlike me, I learned early how to be an expert liar. I had to."

Finn frowned,"I am sure that is true, but you have no need of that here with us. We are all here to look after you now. You have had great power thrust on you and with that comes a heavy responsibility. But I don't mean to imply that you cannot handle it."

Damon looked down. "Maybe I can't. Look at what happened tonight. It all happened so damn fast. The feelings just exploded out of me..."
Finn nodded, "As you learned to lie to protect yourself, I learned to keep my feelings locked away. Even after we were turned, I was the voice of reason. I controlled my hunger better, then I met a girl..."
