The next day when I walk to school trailing behind Lauren as usual I'm completely distracted by my thoughts. There's just one road to cross anymore before we are in the school yard. I don't notice that Lauren stops and I just continue walking.
"Ivy stop!" She screams scared. I stop and look up. I'm in the middle of the road and a car is coming down the hill with a speed way too fast to be legal. I freeze and can't get anything to move. The car comes just closer and closer.
Suddenly someone comes running and drags me with them. The person trips over his feet when he runs. We end up laying on the ground on the other side of the road. The car drives past just a second after. I look up to see who it was who saved me.
"Thanks Andrew." Andrew is in our class. "How did you dare to do that?" I ask still shocked after nearly being hit by a car.
"Someone had to do something. I couldn't just leave you there and see you being hit by a car." I slowly stand up on shaky legs and nearly trip on my own feet but Andrew catches me by my arm before it happens.
"Careful there." He says with a hint of amusement in his voice.
"Thanks again." I say looking at the ground. Lauren comes running with Alex. She wraps her arms around me in a tight embrace.
"Darling do never do that again! I almost had a heart attack!" She sobbs in my ear. I hug her back.
"Are you ok?" Alex asks.
"Yeah I guess. Thanks to Andrew. I'm just a bit shaky and shocked that's all."
"Wow! How can you take it so calmly though you less than a minute ago got almost hit by a car?" Andrew asks amazed.
"I guess it's just my nature." I answer simply.
"Darling how did that even happen?" Lauren is still scared.
"I... I don't know. I didn't just concentrate I guess. I'm mad at myself for putting me in such danger and causing you to almost have a heart attack and Andrew had to save me. I'm sorry everyone and thanks once again Andrew." I say and give him a quick hug. Me, Lauren and Alex start walking to the school. When I look back Andrew is still standing where we left him and he is slowly turning redder and redder. So that's why he saved me.
The rest of the day goes quite well. No accidents or anyhting happens. Andrew seems a bit off on the lessons today. I wonder why? He is usually the one that answers almost every question the teachers ask. Some call him the teacher's pet.
After school I wait for mum to pick me up since today we are going somewhere she wouldn't tell me. Usually I just walk home. I'm currently sitting on the stairs in front of school reading a book. Someone comes and sits next to me.
"Hi." Andrew says.
"Hi." I answer shutting the book.
"Are you waiting for someone?" He asks.
"My mother. She has some surprise to me."
"That sounds nice."
"Belive me, I'm scared and excited at the same time of what she has got planned."
"Why?"
"Because this one time when she had planned a surprise for me it was skydiving. Okay, it was a pretty cool experience but I hate hights more than anything except spiders. Them I hate more. And I have claustrophobia."
"I think it's cool that you've been skydiving. I'd like to try someday. About spiders, I used to be scared of them but when I learned that they are more scared of me than I'm scared of them it stopped."
"That's wice. About earlier, I didn't know you were a fast runner or that you could react so quickly."
"Track is actually one of my sports. The rest are nerdy stuff like chess club but that you knew already didn't you?"
"Yeah I know that." I nod along because I think everyone in our school knows. Andrew has even been in competitons for our school.
"Would you like to come sometime maybe hang out with me and a few of my friends?" Andrew asks.
"I don't know. I'm not really that good in social situations. I'm kinda an introvert."
"No worries! We will be able to make you feel comfortable in no time. I hope." He laughs. I smile.
"Sounds nice. When and where would we meet and what would we do?" I ask.
"We usually meet here and then go over to someone. We play games and just talk and things like that."
"I could maybe come someday this week."
"Come on Thursday because the dance is on Friday. We meet here after school and then go over to my place."
"I'll think about it, maybe I'll come. I have to go now. Bye!" I stand up and walk over to my mother's car.
"Bye!" Andrew shouts after me. I open the door on the passangers side and climb in.
"Are you ready for my surprise?" Mum asks.
"As ready as I'll ever be." I answer. Mum starts to drive away from the school.
"Who were you talking to back there?" She asks.
"Andrew. He invited me to hang out with him and a couple of his friends on Thursday. Can i go?"
"I guess it's fine. Who will be there and where are you going?" Mum is always really nervous when I go over to someone else than Lauren. She's a bit overprotective after the accident a few years ago but I don't mind it.
"A few of his friends, I don't exactly know who. At his place."
"Well I guess I can't say no either. You can go but you have to be home before nine."
"Thanks!" We continue the drive in silence.
"We are here! Wait a moment in the car." Mum steps out from the car and walks through the doors of the small building. A few moments later she comes out again but with a box in her hands. She puts the box in the back seat carefully and then we drive home.
"What's in the box?" I'm curious.
"You'll see at home." Mum smiles mysteriously and doesn't say anything anymore on the drive home. When we arrive at home she takes the box carefully from the back seat and carries it to the front door.
"Could you open the door dear?" She asks
"Wait just a sec." I search for my key and find it in my bag. I open the door and can hear Ebony squeek. I leave my bag and shoes on the floor and run to her cage.
"Hi Ebony! Did you miss me?" I open the cage and pick her up easily. She is so used to me picking her up that she doesn't mind anymore. She actually enjoys it. I sit down on the floor with her in my lap.
"Do you want to know what I have in the box?" Mum asks.
