(adj.) Pleasing to the eye

I try not to feel disappointed when I find the house is empty

Mum left for work early again. She's always gone by the time I wake up, always arriving back by the time I'm asleep.

I miss her. It's selfish that I do.

It's selfish of me to want her to be here when I wake up, when I know she has to go to work. When I know how hard she works.

How hard she has to work ever since he left.

It's not her fault she's not here. She's tries to be, leaves a note when she can't be, still comes into to say goodnight, even though I've long feel asleep.

I just wish it could be how it used to. I wish I could see her in the morning, tell her about the latest gossip in the evening. Hug her goodbye when she leaves for work.

I just miss my mam.

Trudging into the school office half an hour late, like usual, I make my way towards the Front desk.

Waving at the geography teacher who offers a smile back, I see Miss James is at the desk today, which automatically adds an extra bounce to my step.

Leaning my elbow on the edge of the desk I rest my head in my hand, offering Miss James a bright smile.

Miss James is my favourite staff member at Stoneview Academy. She's a tall old lady, with sparkling blue eyes and dark brown hair that has streaks of gray running threw it, an adorable button nose that's splatted with a heavy sprinkle of freckles.

I wish I had freckles. They make people look prettier.

I honestly aspire to look as good as Miss James when I'm above the age of fifty.

Miss James adjusts her glasses, narrowing her eyes now that she can see me properly. I continue to smile at her, craning my head so that I can see what she's working on.

She scowls at me, adjusting her papers so that they're out of my sight. My smile turns into a pout. "You're late again,"

Dropping my head I lean it on my hand that's resting on the desk. "I know."

Miss James narrows her eyes at me, huffing out a puff. "I'm starting to think you do it on purpose,"

"Any excuse to see your pretty face in the morning miss James." I smile at her, watching as she tries the hide the small twitch of her lips.

Rolling her eyes she goes back to filling out a form. "Flattery will get you nowhere young lady." Her voice is stern but the hint of a smile tells me she appreciates the compliment.

Swapping hands I now lean my head on my left hand. "I've been told quite the opposite actually." Craning my neck again I try and catch a peek at what she's writing.

Miss James noticed what I'm doing, shaking her head at me she wiggles her finger in my face. "No, these are confidential young lady." My shoulders slump, my pout coming back.

"Just a hint." Whatever she's doing probably isn't that interesting, but I'm nosy, and it's better then going to maths.

She looks around us before leaning over the desk, I lean too, ready for whatever top secret information she's about to spill.
