Lucy, nearly strangled to death, creates a small explosion of magic that throws the shadow thing up into the air, nearly destroys the bounty, and sends pieces of wood flying, nearly killing us. The shadow thing falls to the splintered deck and tries to stand. Lucy is breathing heavily as she pulls her dagger and stands over the shadow pointing the dagger at its chest. “Ha! Like that little knife is going to kill me.” The shadow wheezes. Lucy just breathes deeply and slightly sways on her feet. The dagger blade flickers and lengthens into a sword blade, striking the shadow thing in the chest. The shadow withers and cries out in pain then disappears in a cloud of smoke.
The sword clatters to the deck and Lucy collapses on the splintered wood. Instantly Lloyd rushes to her and we follow more slowly. Lloyd scoops Lucy into his arms. I pick up Lucy’s sword. It has a gold blade with a silver, bronze, and platinum braided down the middle with an emerald and ruby studded hilt. The sword blade flickers and retracts back to a dagger blade.
I hand the dagger to Sensei, he pauses and sucks in a breath staring at the weapon in his hands. “Sensei, what’s wrong?” Kai asks.
“Nothing important to tell now, remind me later and we’ll talk.” Sensei says as he slips the dagger into Lucy’s sheath.
“Poor thing.” Nya sighs as she strokes golden hair off Lucy’s forehead.
“It looks like we won’t be doing any training for a while. Maybe we should get Lucy a magic teacher.” Jay says looking at the damage from Lucy’s magic trick.
“Leray could.” Zane points out.
“But first we need to find her.” Lloyd says grimly.
“OH! That reminds me, the Jamanakai village hospital called. They have a patient claiming to be Zane’s sister. I asked for a description of the girl and she sounds pretty much like Leray, weapons and all.” I tell them.
“Well then as Leray loves to say, ‘let’s go.’” Jay says heading to the bridge room.
Nya takes Lucy from Lloyd and they both stand up. “The bounty is damaged, so you won’t be able to fly to Jamanakai village.” Nay says as she disappears through the door going below deck. Jay stops, turns around, and comes back.
“Then how about we ride Ultra-dragon?” Lloyd says.
In reply a bellow echoes across the land. Only one animal could make that sound. I smile and say, “I think he would like that.” As I speak a shape comes out of the clouds and we can hear wing beats.
“Good. Then you five well go to Jamanakai village while Nya and I stay here and look after Lucy.” Sensei says leaning on his bamboo staff. Kai, Jay, Zane, Lloyd, and I nod. Then Sensei turns and goes after Nya.
Within a few minutes Ultra-dragon spirals down and lands heavily. We climb on his back, Lloyd takes the reins, and we take off. “Hey! You’re a lot better at this!” Jay says with a slight laugh.
Lloyd smiles and turns around very quickly, “Really?” Suddenly we go through a series of twists, dives and rolls. When we finally straighten out Jay and Lloyd are laughing their heads off.
“You should have seen your faces!” Jay crows with laughter.
“You guy’s scream like girls!” Lloyd hoots. I scowl and they stop laughing. “Put your masks on. We’re landing.” Lloyd says and flips on his mask. I do the same so do Kay, Jay, and Zane as we drop down in slow circles.
Ultra-dragon lands in the Hospital’s parking lot without crushing any cars, but the impact from his weight makes some of the cars start beeping. People stop and stare at us, I give them a short tense wave and we get off Ultra-dragon then swiftly make our way over to the Hospital.
