"your birthday is coming up in a couple of days," joshua points out.

"yes, thanks for pointing that out."

"you're welcome," joshua answers, putting his knees against mine against the snow.

"how did you know?"

"ashley let me in on that little secret."

"mm."

"i know your birthday... but not even your last name."

"weird... i know neither of yours."

"dun and june eighteen two thousand and two."

"mmm."

i stare at our footprints in the snow, drawing a little heart where our feet meet.

he stares as me as i stare at the heart i made.

i draw a plus in the middle. he draws a jd on the left of the plus. i put a tj on the right.

"johnson?"

"no."

"jones?"

"no."

"jack."

"no."

"jackson?"

"no."

he stares at me. his eyes sparkle against the snow.

"what are other j last names?"

"i dunno."

"liar. you do know because yours is one i haven't said."

"mmm."

"james?"

"no."

"jordan?"

"no, and it would be kind of weird if my last name is your brothers first name."

"well it's not, so doesn't matter."

"okay."

"jenkins?"

"no."

"johnson?"

"you already guessed that."

"shit!"

"you're cute when you curse."

"thank you," he says, putting his hand to his face and resting his elbow on my knee.

"do you give up?"

"nope! how about johns?"

"no."

"jacob?"

"no."

"jacobson?"

"it's not a 'son' name. there's no son."

"okay. hmmm."

he looks so cute when he thinks.

"judd?"

"have you ever heard that as a last name besides the one actor and her family?"

"okay fair point."

"it's not judd."

"okay okay.."

i want to hold his hand as he thinks, or maybe tell him what it is. but i don't wanna tell him. i want him to guess.

"jasper?"

"nope."

"i don't know. i can't even think of another last name that starts with a j."

"joseph."

"t-thats your last name?" he asks, his eyes wide.

"mhm."

"i've never- can i hold your hand?"

i nod and he grabs it slowly.

"i've never met a joseph before."

"really?"

"really!"

"does.. does that make me special, joshua?"

"tyler, you've always been special."

"since ashley outed my birthday im telling you theirs."

"okay."

"september twenty ninth."

"damn it's too far for me to wish them a belated birthday but so far in the future for me to have us celebrate it together."

"they were almost born at nine twenty nine am on nine twenty nine."

"what time was she born?"

"nine twenty six."

"three minutes too early."

"yep."

"what's your middle name?"

"robert, yours?"

"william."

"oh."

he looks at me, squeezing my hand and smiles.

"tyler?"

"yeah?"

"i really really like your name."
