I opened my eyes to the sunrise that peaks through our balcony window; I turned onto my side that faces my husband's side of the bed to find it empty. I had an estimation of where he should be, I found the door of the nursery closed apart from a slight crack large enough for me to be able to hear Soda singing to our daughter who was cradled in his arms.
( the following are the lyrics to a song from Hamilton, which I am well aware did not exist at the time, written by Lin Manuel Miranda)"🎶Dear Theodosia, what to say to you?
You have my eyes, you have your mother's name
When you came into the world, you cried
And it broke my heart
I'm dedicating every day to you
Domestic life was never quite my style
When you smile, you knock me out, I fall apart
And I thought I was so smart
You will come of age with our young nation
We'll bleed and fight for you
We'll make it right for you
If we lay a strong enough foundation
We'll pass it on to you, we'll give the world to you
And you'll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Yeah, you'll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Oh Philip, when you smile I am undone
My son, look at my son
Pride is not the word I'm looking for
There is so much more inside me now
Oh, Philip, you outshine the morning sun
My son
When you smile, I fall apart
And I thought I was so smart
My father wasn't around I swear that I'll be around for you
I'll do whatever it takes
I'll make a million mistakes
I'll make the world safe and sound for you
Will come of age with our young nation
We'll bleed and fight for you
We'll make it right for you
If we lay a strong enough foundation
We'll pass it on to you, we'll give the world to you
And you'll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Yeah, you'll blow us all away
Someday, someday🎶"I tried to keep my hands steady from the full-on happy crying this moment brought me to try to take a picture to capture this magical moment. My sniffles were no longer inaudible to Soda and his head snapped to where I was. " Sweetheart, what's wrong?" he asked worriedly, "Oh Soda, these are happy tears, you are such a sweet father" I sobbed. He wrapped an arm around me as he cradled Charlotte with the other, " I love you so much, honey, and our daughter " I sniffled; " I love my two girls too" he replied, kissing my forehead. Charlotte looked up at me with her beautiful olive eyes and outstretched her arms towards me. Soda smiled at me as He handed our little princess to me, I cradled her in my arms and snuggled my face in my husband's chest. We stayed like that for a couple of moments until Charlotte started crying, informing us she was
" y'know, we should be eating breakfast ourselves as well" Soda reminded
" Great idea, honey"
" eggs and bagels?"
" sure!"
We walked to the kitchen and my husband made me take a seat in the kitchen as he prepared breakfast, he insisted on taking care of it as I sat down cradling Charlotte. After 15 minutes or so, Soda plated our breakfast and as I looked closer I noticed a touch only my husband would add- scrambled eggs colored green! I giggled at the detail as that was such a Soda move of his, if you have someone like Soda in your life you never get bored.Soda and I took turns watching our baby girl as the other got dressed and got ready for the day. Soda wore his loungewear and I snuck a pair of his sweatpants which he didn't mind; the rest of the day, we spent together with our baby. Charlotte spent the day sleeping in Soda's arms as I leaned my head against his shoulder as we watched our favorite movie. My eyes started to get heavy with sleep as there have been tons of sleepless nights with baby Charlotte's cries in the middle of the night, I don't mind though. Soda noticed my struggle to stay awake and nudged me to lay down on my side with my head in his lap and drifted off to sleep.
—------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soda was on his way back to the supermarket to pick up some groceries; "I'll take Charlotte with me, she'll probably like it" he had said before he left, I had to finish up some paperwork for a client of mine. Over thirty minutes had passed and Soda hadn't returned. I started to get worried and to make matters worse; I heard blood-curdling screams coming from the lot as I raced to it.
The sounds of gunshots echoed all throughout the lot as countless greasers lay dead, killed by a group of socs and their heaters. Soda was targeted by one of the Socs as he ran towards me cradling a blanket with our baby in it. That damn soc pulled the trigger as two bullets were released. Soda jerked forward to his knees and fell to the ground as with his last breath, he whispered my name. " NOOO!" I yelled, " s-Sara, I love you" then he lay still. " SODA! SODA! I love you too, please, please don't leave me" I sobbed. My daughter and husband, gone.I woke up screaming in cold sweat on my husband's lap. " Sara, honey, what's wrong?" He asked as he wrapped his arms around me. "Where is Charlotte?" I asked, " I put her in her crib, why?" I shuddered thinking about how I was going to tell him as I recalled the events and the feeling of losing them, luckily I didn't have to. "Did you have a bad dream?" He inquired worriedly, I nodded, "Oh sweetheart". I sobbed into his chest as he hugged me tight, " it was awful Soda, just awful, you and Charlotte were killed and I could never live without you both".
" sweetheart I am so sorry that happened, but it was all a dream; it ain't gonna hurt you no more, I promise I won't let it come true"Soda never failed to make me feel safe, I could never have asked for a better man to share my life with. I love him and the family that I have built with him so much and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
