" Have a good day at school, honey!" I had said to my six-year-old daughter as me and soda dropped her off at her new elementary school for her to start kindergarten. I was revising over some paperwork on the kitchen island as Soda picked up Charlotte; I heard the door close, followed by the sound of my daughter crying.
She ran over to me and sat on my lap, hugging me as she cried. " Sweetheart, what's wrong? Something happen at school?" She nodded but continued crying hysterically, too much to understand anything she said. Soda looked over at us worried, " everyone was really mean to me, I don't wanna go back! I don't wanna! Mrs. Cathy didn't make them and told them to continue!" She cried. My heart broke as I heard Charlotte's pleas to not make her go back, I glanced at Soda and he was on the verge of crying yet he was furious; not at Charlotte, never at Charlotte, but just hearing the type of treatment she received . " sweetheart, I am so sorry they treated you like this; mommy and I will go talk to your principal tomorrow morning".
As promised, we walked into the main office of Charlotte's school and sat down in front of the principal's desk. " Mr. and Mrs. Curtis, it is highly unprofessional to show up unannounced and at such short notice" Mr. Johnson, the principal, scoffed; I could see the powerhouse of the toxic environment. Soda scowled " My apologizes Mr. Johnson but frankly, I don't care".
" Excuse me!"
" Mr. Johnson with all due respect, the atmosphere gathered here from just a few hours is enough to make one of the strongest girls I know who crying is foreign to, cry" I intercepted
" Not my problem your daughter is too soft and weak for the world"
Soda's scowl took over as he banged his fist on the desk " Such a shame you are building the foundation of our country so rotten and malicious!" he yelled " We're withdrawing her from your school"
" go right ahead, I'll be glad once you and your stupid family are gone"
"NO ONE TALKS ABOUT MY FAMILY THAT WAY! GOOD DAY SIR!"
Soda and I stormed out the door, snatching our daughter from her former classroom, and headed home.We got in the car and Soda began to drive away after I got Charlotte situated in her car seat. As he looked at the road, I noticed tears trailing his face and by the way, his eyebrows were arched and that frown that seemed permanent was still etched on his face.
" Mommy, why is daddy crying?" Charlotte asked,
" The principal just said some mean things to us" I responded simply trying to hold back a few tears and not to worry my daughter. Once we got home, we took our daughter to her room as we went to ours to talk." Did you hear the way he cursed our family name?!" Soda fumed
" I know, honey, what can we do now? She's old enough and mature enough to be attending kindergarten, we can't just throw away her shot at her education because of some hijos de su madre"
" that's just the toxic world we live in"
" Do you think she is just still a little too young to be exposed to too much too quickly"
" yeah, I just wish I would have thought of that before we sent her to that awful place"
" It is not all your fault, I am just as much at fault as you; we will figure out a solution to this. We can help Charlotte, we're her parents"
The phone rang, I picked it up as I was closest to it, "Curtis household, Sara Curtis speaking" I responded. I heard Ponyboy's voice from the other side, " Hey Sara, is it okay if I talk to Soda for a sec?" he asked
" Sure", I handed the phone to my husband
" What's up, pony? What, why? I'm so sorry pony. Wait! Before you hang up just know we might have a new job opportunity for you and I think you're going to like it, bye Pony". I was left confused and anxious to find out what my husband was talking with his younger brother about but by the sound of it, it appears that Ponyboy and his family have fallen into a bit of a hard time. Luckily, Soda was right there to answer my questions; " Ponyboy just got fired from his job because he was framed for embezzlement, which is insane!" He expressed. He must have noticed the frown on my face because he quickly added " Don't worry, darling, I have an idea but it involves Charlotte so you have as much say in it as I do".—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ponyboy, Soda, and I sat down at the dining room table after Soda and I talked about his plan. We offered Pony some water which he obliged as we began to propose to him a well-paying job teaching Charlotte; we are well aware that it is not ideal to hide Charlotte from the world and thousands of kids have gone to kindergarten and are perfectly fine but Dally promised to teach her how to defend herself once she's older. Ponyboy gladly agreed to our offer and it was settled, Charlotte would be homeschooled by her uncle for a couple of years.
