*Sorry it took me so long to update, but I hope you enjoy this chapter. I did a bit of medical research for it, also it is unedited so please forgive any grammatical, punctual or spelling mistakes. Enjoy!*
After Francesca, the patient I was just with was taken up to an O.R. I put myself to use..or tried to at least. everyone was rushing about and I couldn't seem to get to anyone quick enough so I was left running from one bed to another. Until a man came in holding his stomach in pain. I walked to him "Sir, are you in pain?" I asked trying to study his expression. He nodded breathlessly. "whats your name?" I said as I started helping him to a bed. he was older, with big glasses and deep wrinkles around his eyes and mouth. He had short silvery hair that just reached his forehead and as soon as we made it to the bed I helped him on. "Mason Woodstone" he replied between breathes. "Where does it hurt?" which was a dumb question. He was clutching his stomach tightly, where else would it be? so I slipped some gloves on and started feeling his abdomen after he pointed to it. As I was working an intern that I'd never seen before walked up with a smile. She had medium brown hair, very pretty brown eyes that were a lovely contrast against her light skin and a small frame. "Can I assist you with anything?" She asked in a sweet tone. She must be new. "You are?" I placed an oxygen mask on mr Woodstone to help him breathe and looked back to the girl. "Oh, sorry. Im Jo" I raised my eyebrows and looked at her waiting for her to finish her name. After a couple moments of not getting the hint I helped her out "Jo..?" her cheeks flushed, and she looked embarrassed "Sorry, Jo Wilson" I smiled "well, Jo I'll have you do a quick exam on Mr Woodstone here." I nodded to the man and slipped my gloves off, walking to the bin and threw them in the waste. I turned back to Dr Wilson and asked her to let me know when she was finished. I walked to another bed and grabbed the chart..cut on the hand. Basic work but work nonetheless. "Hi, I'm Doctor Grey, I'll be doing your sutures" I smiled and got to work. it was a small cut so it didn't take long. I placed a bandage on the stitches and asked a nurse to discharge the patient.
I was about to head upstairs to check on a patient when I heard someone scream. I turned quickly, my blood rushing. and ran to the bed Mr Woodstone is on. Jo was standing a couple feet away while Mr Woodstone laid in his bed flailing wildly. "I need some help over here!" I called out and held down his arms the best that I can. but he was a man, he was bigger than me and I could barely keep him down "Sir you need to relax!"
"It hurts! It hurts!" he screemed
After what seemed like minutes a couple of men and women rushed over and gave me a hand. "Give him 100ccs of lorazepam!" I shout over the yelling of this man. As a nurse administered the drug he calmed down but was in a great deal of pain. I placed my hand on his forehead. Hot. He was feverish.
"Mr. Woodstone when was the last time you ate?" I asked as I placed my fingers on the left side of his abdomen. It was swelled.
"Uh, I don't know yesterday. I haven't been hungry lately" he groaned
Loss of appetite, fever, severe abdominal pain, swelled abdomen. "Mr Woodstone, I believe your appendix is swelled and that's causing the pain. We're going to need to put you on antibiotics right away, and then take you into surgery, okay?"
He nodded. I glanced up at Dr Wilson who was looking at him horrified "Dr Wilson, would you like to scrub in?" She looked at me and nodded eagerly. "Prep him, I'll go book an O.R." she smiled at me and nodded. Great, I get to scrub in on an Appy! I walked out of the E.R. and upstairs to the O.R. board then paged Doctor Bailey. I placed my hands on my hips and looked at the schedule. O.R. 3 looks like it's available. Doctor Bailey walked up to me expectantly "What do you got, Grey?"
"Mason Woodstone, late sixties early seventies came in with severe abdominal pain. I discovered he also had a fever, loss of appetite and his abdomen was swelled." I replied trying not to look too happy about it. I haven't scrubbed in on an Appendectomy since I was an Intern.
"Appendicitis" Bailey said and I nodded. She let out a short sigh and grabbed the marker, writing the patient information and when it came to who would be performing the surgery I was shocked to see her write 'Grey'. I raised my eyebrows "Doctor Bailey?" She ignored me until she asked me who the interns would be, I told her Doctor Wilson.
She capped the marker and turned to me. "You have been a resident for a little while now, you could probably do this surgery blindfolded with your memory thing." she waved her hand at me when she said that. "It's time for your first solo surgery. Congratulations, Doctor Grey" she said with a smile.
"Oh! Thank you so much Doctor Bailey!" I was about to hug her but she gave me a look that said if I tried touching her she would probably give the surgery to someone else. I clasped my hands together happily and let out a laugh of joy. "Now go scrub in. I'll be there in soon"
I nodded and made myself walk, not skip down the hall. I was grinning from ear to ear as I headed to the scrub room when I saw Mark walking down the hallway towards me. "Mark!" I ran to him and he welcomed me into his arms. Before pushing me back gently and looking at me slightly concerned "Lexie? What's going on?"
"I got my first solo surgery!" I replied, barely able to contain my excitement. His eyes lit up "That's great! What is it?"
"An Appendectomy-" I barely managed to get out before he nodded.
"My first solo surgery was an Appy too. It's okay to be nervous, I mean. I wasn't but it's totally normal. And if you mess up once or twice it's not a big deal, probably"
I rolled my eyes "You are so full of it, Mark Sloan" I said knowing he was joking, but also being partly serious.
He laughed and tilted his head from side-to-side. "That's true. I'll try to peek in but I'm sure you have to go scrub in"
I nodded before standing on my tippy toes and placing both of my hands on his face and kissing him, right in the hallway, not caring. He kissed me back. And, like so many other times, my lips burned with sensation and it felt like someone lit a fire inside of me.
"Doctor Grey! You have a surgery to scrub in on, you have time for that after" Doctor Bailey barked at me and I pulled away from Mark, looking at her and stepping back. "Sorry, Doctor Bailey"
She walked past me "Mmhmm" she said with a disapproving look. I turned my gaze back to Mark and he winked at me.
As I walked into the scrub room and placed my mask on and started cleaning my hands and wrists I looked into the O.R. excitedly. I was going to operate, by myself! This is amazing. Oh, I really hope I don't screw this up. I dried off my hands and stepped into the O.R.

Hi, Everyone! I am SO sorry it's been two months since the last update. So I tried to make this one long (and hopefully interesting) I also did a little bit of medical research, so all of the information about Appendicitis did come from the internet (Which, I know, isn't always correct) But what else could I do?
How do you think Lexie will do on her first surgery? What gender her baby will be?
I LOVE hearing feedback. Next update after 15 votes, and 5 comments.
love you all,
-Emilee
