She's pregnant? We're not even married for 24 hours and she's pregnant.
She can't have alchohol. How are we supposed to celebrate now? Hmm...sparkling apple juice possibly. All of this goes through my head on our way back to the apartment. She's looking out the window with a hand on her stomach. I know she's thinking about it too. I ask anyways.
"What are you thinking about, Lex?"
"The future. Names, colors" she smiles as she tells me.
"Play dates"
Her smile fades. "Work"
"You can still go back to work. Just because your pregnant doesn't mean you can't go in."
"I know that..but" she shakes her head, nevermind.
"Lexie tell me"
She sighs "I just don't want her to-"
I interrupt "Wait hold on, her?"
"Yeah. I don't want to call the baby an it so I'm going to call him her and him so that she doesn't get offended..well okay she might not but I'll feel offended for her"
That all went straight over my head.
"Okay.."
"Does that make sense?" she asks
"Yeah" I say convincingly.
"So I just don't want to be away from him for such a long time. because babies take a lot of work, and care. From both parents. And we can't do that if we're both doctors..maybe I should quit"
"Hold on! nobody's quitting. The hospital has a great daycare. Zola and Sophia and even Tucker go there all the time. They're perfectly happy. And if Bailey is happy with it then it must be good"
She looked down and sighed "Your right"
I smirked "I know"
She gave me a playful punch, which still hurt, and we headed home.
The second we walked through the door of our apartment she walked over the the body mirror and turned to the side.
I walked into the kitchen and put my keys on the counter. I hear her from the other room.
"What?"
So I walk over to her and see what the fuss is about. she lifted up the bottom of her shirt and was looking at her stomach in the mirror. A small bump was there.
" how could I not have noticed that? I mean, I thought I was just getting fat!"
I laugh as she puts her shirt down and faces the mirror forward. I'm standing right behind her.
She's so small compared to me, so young, so fragile.
I wrap my arms around her waist and pull her close, resting my hands on her tummy.
"I don't think you could ever get fat Lexie. Even when you ate all that junk food"
She laughs remembering the though and rests her head on my shoulder.
"What did I ever do to deserve you?"
I ask, thinking outloud.
She smiles "you taught me"
I chuckle
"You taught me what true love is"
She continues.
I smile and kiss her forehead.
"I love you, Alexandra"
"I love you, Marcus"
I cringe, she laughs. My beautiful wife turns towards me and wraps her arms around my neck and plays with my hair. My arms wrap around her small waist easily, so I do.
She looks up at me with beautiful eyes that I could stare into for hours.
"When should we tell everyone?"
"Huh?"
I don't quite hear what she said, as I'm still thinking about how beautiful she is and how lucky I am to have her.
She giggles "I said, when should we tell everyone?"
"Oh..why don't you just a get a shirt that says 'I'm pregnant!' On it"
She laughs and then tilts her head in thought
"we could so do that. But where would you find a shirt that says that?" She raises her eyebrows in question
"Um you could make one"
I suggest
"Me? Why do I have to do it? It's your idea"
I roll my eyes teasingly "Fine"
She smiles "I love you"
I lean in and kiss her. Her lips fit so perfectly with mine it's hard to believe I was ever with anybody else.
I pull her even closer, deepening the kiss. We pull back and I kiss her forehead.
"I'm starving" she says
"Okay what do you want?" I ask, out if habit.
"I can make something actually"
I raise my eyebrows
"You? With a stove?"
She nods "Mmhmm"
"Alright, as long as you don't use a knife" I tease, remembering the time that she cut the tip of her finger off.
"I won't as long as you don't tell me your pregnant daughter is going to be living with us"
The words sting. I don't know if she meant them to, but that's my daughter. I know that it hurt Lexie but it hurt me more when she left.
I let go of Lexie. "Better get cooking then"
I start walking away and her arms slip away. There's an empty space where she was standing, just moments ago. I miss her already, but I'm upset that she brought it up again.
I can hear her sigh "Mark"
I keep walking.
"Mark!"
I walk into the bedroom and close the door behind me. I walk over to my dresser and change my shirt
"Mark! I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking. You know how I get sometimes..I speak before I think!"
I pull my jacket on
"Please open the door, Mark. I'm sorry" her voice is filled with desperation and apology, but I need some air.
So I so as she asked, I open the door. She was standing right outside so she stumbles backwards but quickly catches herself.
"Where are you going?" She sounds scared, worried. Does she really think I'm leaving her?
I sigh and take her by the shoulders and look her in the eye.
"Lexie, I still love you okay? I'm just going to work. I'll see you later"
She looks offended. I guess I came off a bit parent-y. I walk to the door and open it, I walk out and leave Lexie in our apartment all alone.
